I'm glad I ordered it anyway

After reading several critical reviews here, I was a little hesitant to buy this book. I'm glad I ordered it anyway.

Despite the fact that the art in this book is excellent, it's not a coffee table book, nor is it an art showcase for the authors. This book is designed for the beginner to intermediate level artist who wants to get a good understanding of what happens when a human face goes about the business of describing emotions and feelings.

The book consists of 2 main parts. The first part is an illustrated breakdown and explanation of individual facial features. In other words, a step-by-step approach to drawing expressive eyes, noses, chins, etc. All the essentials are presented and thoroughly covered with the underlying anatomy taken into consideration. The second part shows how all these parts of the face work together to convey a believable character expression.

My favorite part of the book is where the authors created a character for each set of emotions and dedicated a page spread to each expression. Each spread is a step-by-step drawing tutorial with a short paragraph of useful instructions for every step.

I wanted to improve my confidence and skill in sketching and drawing cartoon expressions and this book did the job perfectly. Big thanks to the authors and the publisher for putting it together.

Wonderful character studies

I use this book in my art class to show how facial features change with expressions. The book has wonderful series of characters who are put through various situations, and it shows how to re-draw their face through each expression change. The art is superb, especially compared to other books in its price-range. The only issue is that I have had to censor the book because some of them images are not school appropriate. There are several (heavily exaggerated) scantily clad women and a man who goes through the stages of being drunk and hungover.

As an Adult Literacy Tutor I find this book an invaluable tool. The information covered is concise yet covers a broad range of grammar mechanics. It is written in a way that is easy to understand. I use it myself to check tricky grammar points.

I recommend this book for all English teachers and anyone that cares about writing well.

Thank God He Gave Us SEAL Team Warriors

FULL DISCLOSURE: I have friends who are former Teams guys who, along the way, helped me stay safe in my career thus I do have a special place in my heart for these guys. That said, I've never met Mr. Lacz so I have no personal connection with him though I learned, after reading his book that he apparently lives in my old stomping grounds in the Panhandle.

I bought this book after seeing him on Fox & Friends talking about his book. I decided I'd buy it as a way of quietly supporting him and those who have fought for us. I figured it would be like all the other books out there where authors talks more about their accomplishment, with perhaps some embellishments here and there, mix in a little CDI (chick dig it) lingo and presto "I'm a hero." That is NOT the case at all here. Mr. Lacz gives the ground truth of war and the warriors who fight to protect our freedoms along with his own experiences, warts and all.

The Last Punisher will put you under the helmet and in the books kicking of moon dust as you walk the streets of Ramadi. But where other "warrior" books want to share only the "good" stuff, Lacz shares some of the otherwise "boring" stuff to give the reader a better perspective of how things actually happen. He talks about the number of times they got geared up, stressed trying to get to their objective, finding nothing, then stressed getting safely back home. It happens. Not every day is profitable. Yet they still paid the fee in sweat equity and fatigue only to come up empty handed. But when they were profitable, grab your backside and hold on. If you've seen the movies; American Sniper, Lone Survivor, 13 hrs, and so forth, you can easily visualize where Lacz is taking you. You can easily visualize how SEALs move from cover to cover. You walk along side of him, preparing for a direct action contact. And you're there with the guys witnessing him screwing things up.

But beyond putting you under the helmet, Lacz puts you in the head of a warrior and shares what it take to survive mentally. And why, when they come back home, they have nowhere near the difficulty readjusting to life than the other 98% of us would have. Sure their humor may be "sick" to some. Sure they may find something funny it's hitting the fan. It is something very difficult to grasp if you've never been there and Lacz takes us to there. "Teams and shhhstuff." (Forgive me Dauber but Amazon censors)

Lacz does not get into the politics of war save for the REMFs (get the book for the definition) who were calling the shots putting people in harms way oftentimes with poor judgment. The politics were clearly pay grades above his and I believe he was right to leave his opinions out of this book. For managers and supervisor, pay attention here. Learn to read your people. Learn how to feed them and how to rest them. Learn how to keep them hungry for more. And if you're not shedding tears when he shares bringing Marc Lee (HOOYAH! MARC LEE) home, you're not human and you need to get yourself checked out.

If you're an American, if you love this country, please show your support with the purchase of this book. It's such a small price to pay for what he and the SEAL Team THREE "Punishers" have given you.

Like most good SEAL books

BTF and buy this book

I give "The Last Punisher" 5 stars because it not only exceeded my expectations but it made an effect on my own life. I was anticipating a "cool" SEAL book but what I read was a very well written book about a young man who I have a lot in common with. The author gives a realistic, in depth description of the gnarliest ground battle in the Iraq war. Like most good SEAL books, "The Last Punisher" is filled with intense action and cool weapons. What separates this book is that it reads more like a novel, developing characters, personifying war and the juxtaposition of life and death. Throughout the book I found myself laughing, crying, understanding and learning about how 1% of people are capable of such things as becoming a US Navy SEAL, being able to confront the enemy downrange and send a heavy dose of US ammunition while serving as a steward of the flag.

I personally was inspired to change my life and find my own inner SEAL throughout my own life. The motivating mantra to "BTF" (big tough frog) right through tough points in your life is a message that everyone can relate to. In the business world, I work with a team of individuals who need to work together to accomplish their goals. The way Kevin describes his training, preparation, communication and the execution of his teams missions gave me a new insight on how I could do the same with mine.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for fascinating account of a true American hero. You will not want to put this book down and when you are finished, you'll want to BTF your life.

Christmas Keepsakes was a 'Keeper'

After recently losing my husband to cancer, I hesitated to read this book; however, it was emotionally soothing, brought back some painful memories, but mostly, some touching thoughts. I loved the quotes at the beginning of each chapter. It was a very easy! lovely read.

About the Author

Herschel Knapp, PhD, MSSW has more than 20 years of experience as a health science researcher; he has provided project management for innovative implementations designed to improve the quality of patient care throughout the Veterans Health Administration via multisite, health science implementations. In addition to full-time work at the VA, he teaches masters-level courses at the University of Southern California; he has also taught at the University of California, Los Angeles and California State University, Los Angeles. Dr. Knapp has served as the lead statistician on a longitudinal cancer research project and managed the program evaluation metrics for a multisite, non-profit children’s center. His clinical work includes emergency/trauma therapy in hospital settings. The author of numerous articles in peer-reviewed health science journals, he is also the author of Introductory Statistics Using SPSS (SAGE, 2013), Therapeutic Communication: Developing Professional Skills, Second Edition (SAGE, 2014) and Introduction to Social Work Practice: A Practical Workbook (SAGE, 2010). About the Author
Joshua H. Pien is a faculty researcher and Hindi-Urdu language specialist at the National Foreign Language Center at the University of Maryland. Previously he was an assistant professor of Hindi at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California. He has also taught Hindi at the University of Wisconsin.

Fauzia Farooqui teaches Urdu and Hindi at Princeton University. She has also taught Urdu-Hindi at various other institutions, including the University of Virginia, the Defense Language Institute, University of Michigan, and the American Institute of Indian Studies in Lucknow, India. Her other publications include a monograph on the prose poem in Urdu and various original pieces of poetry, short fiction, and literary criticism, which have appeared in leading Urdu literary journals.

Finally--some hope for me learning Urdu!

I am so happy to be working with this text. With Urdu-speaking in-laws, I have been struggling to find good Urdu learning materials for several years. This book is well laid-out, progresses at a reasonable pace, and I am making much better progress than I have made with other books and software programs. Thank you for this resource! I hope there is a second book in the works!

First rate language guide

I'm a heritage Urdu speaker, and was looking for material that would help me improve my language skills for both professional and personal reasons. After going through some other language books that were either too simple or poorly edited, I came across Beginning Urdu. I'm a big fan: well-organized, useful audio material, exercises that are both interesting and challenging. This book should serve people who have no exposure to Urdu before, or people like me, who have had some exposure but cannot yet comfortable speak and read it. Gook luck.

I have nothing but good things to say about this book:
-It is the first book which successfully taught me to read and write the Nasta'liq script. I am no longer afraid of Nasta'liq and I actually enjoy trying to read things written in Nasta'liq, having learned how from this book.
-Excellent, LONG, COMPLETE audio accompaniment to the course
-Lots of vocabulary
-tons of examples

Great book, with incredible ideas and organized, clean presentation. Even if you are of of those Morphosis critics that do not necessarily agree with their style; you can take alot from the way their analysis is done and presented, the way their ideas evolve and how they respond to context.
