4th Generation Warfare Handbook, by William S. Lind, Gregory A. Thiele

Written by the author of the Maneuver Warfare Handbook and an active-duty USMC officer with experience in Iraq, 4th Generation Warfare Handbook is the doctrine for a new generation of war. Over the last 40 years, the world has gradually entered into a post-Clausewitzian state where the wars are undeclared, the battlefields can be anywhere, the uniforms are optional, and the combatants as well as the targets are often "civilian". Conventional militaries have repeatedly attempted to utilize technology to meet the new challenges posed, but even the most advanced technology has provided little more than meaningless short-term victories rendered futile in months, if not weeks.

This inability of Western governments and militaries to come to terms with the changing nature of modern warfare has led to failed interventions, failed occupations, and now even failed states everywhere from Eastern Europe to Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. And with the recent mass movement of peoples around the world, 4th Generation Warfare can be safely expected to appear in Western Europe and the United States before long.

Drawing on their decades of experience with military history and military action, the authors have distilled 4GW theory into a short, concise, easily accessible handbook that provides the soldier, the military analyst, and the civilian observer with a guide to understanding and responding to the changing realities of this challenging new form of war.

A good start, but lacking details.
By Michael Mcdaniel
Over the last decade, there's been a lot of discussion of 4th Generation warfare. Two schools of thought have formed - one touting 4GW as the latest in modern warfare, the other regarding 4GW as an adaption of classical low-intensity warfare methods to modern communications and propaganda methods. I'm personally an adherent of the latter position, but it doesn't matter.

This book presents useful information on modern low-intensity conflict techniques, but the nuggets are buried in parable-like stories and require sifting to find. But the nuggets are real gold, not fake. The comments about the need to afford an enemy an honorable surrender are particularly true - in retrospect, one of the greatest mistakes of the Iraq campaign in 2003 was the decision to demobilize the Iraqi Army and throw many thousands of trained fighting men onto the street. The observation about the desirability of using bribes is also spot-on.

I think this book has several shortcomings. First, it was written assuming that the reader is thoroughly conversant with 4GW terminology and arguments. A review of basic concepts would have been welcome. Second, there was very little presented on employment of the assets available to a high-end military in low-intensity conflict. And the intelligence and logistic capabilities that can be brought to bear can be very useful. Finally, I think the material would have been much more useful had it been integrated more fully into something like the classic Small Wars Manual that the U.S. Marine Corps developed prior to the Second World War.

This is a good start, but not the definitive work on the subject.

Essential Mindset Shift for the Generals and the Troops
By Daniel F.
All American troops posted to overseas theaters would benefit from reading this manual. But it is the generals and higher-ups who most need the lessons contained in it. 4th generation warfare represents “a crisis of the legitimacy of the state,” and the first step towards fighting them successfully is a mindset shift: to recognize that military force is incapable, by itself, of restoring legitimacy to a state. The standard American practice of “firepower on targets” is simply not effective in 4GW. “Great states must learn how to preserve enemy states at the same time that they defeat them.” This is obviously a central lesson from the Iraq conflict, where this axiom was violated in spades. This manual sets about to correct those mistakes and provide a roadmap for success in the new type of conflict we face.

The manual introduces a new paradigm for dealing with conflicts involving non-state actors. Along with the traditional view of war as involving three levels: the tactical, the operational and the strategic, the authors introduce a new tripartite lens for understanding 4G war: the physical, the mental and the moral. In each case, a higher level trumps a lower level. Indeed, the authors describe the central dilemma of 4GW as the fact that “what works for you on the physical (and sometimes mental) level often works against you at the moral level.” A corollary of this is that “it is more important not to kill the wrong people than it is to kill armed opponents.” Enemy bodycounts may merely present media and PR victories for your opponents, while demoralizing our own troops, and turning public opinion against you.

Among the central concepts and topics discussed in this book are:

-- De-escalation: More often than not, our military goals are furthered by de-escalating, whereas most troops have “escalation” as a default reaction to most situations. This concept goes hand in hand with the idea of preserving the state, and keeping the local populace on our side, or at least not against us.

-- “51% solutions”, rather than total victory are desirable in 4GW.

-- Integrating with, and not alienating, the local populace as key to success.

-- Openness with the press, and admitting to mistakes.

-- Intelligence as a bottom-up rather than a top-down affair. They give the memorable example of the Swedish word for military intelligence, which translates as “corrections from below”.

-- Retraining line infantry as “light infantry”. Troops must become flexible, independent, self-reliant, self-disciplined, less “orderly” and hierarchical, and focus on achieving goals rather than merely carrying out orders.

Perhaps the greatest challenge for the American military (outside of special ops and SEALS that already have this mindset) is to move away from the 2G, centralized, command-based, top-down approach, towards a 3G model that emphasizes nimbleness, lightness of footprint, quick reaction times, and that learns to use the techniques of the enemy against him, rather than relying on firepower alone. The authors make a strong case that Western militaries (and the American military in particular) are stuck in a 2nd generation mindset: “Firepower on targets” is what war is about to them, and it is a hopelessly dated concept. Indeed, it was dated in WWII when the 3G German military defeated a technically superior 2G French army.

Implicitly if not explicitly, the manual focuses on our experience in the Middle East. It is a useful thought experiment to contemplate conflicts in other regions: e.g. the Mexican drug war, the Tamil rebellion in Sri Lanka, the Muslim separatist movement in the Philippines, etc., and to imagine the concepts intorduced here applied in those situations. In any event, given that our military most needs a manual for dealing with the Middle East, this manual is the right tool for our era.

This is a manual for soldiers. Given the events of 11/13/15 in Paris as well as the pervasive low-level civil wars that are taking place across the West, perhaps the publishers can consider producing another manual: 4th Generation Warfare Handbook for the Civilian. Many more of us will be faced with the question of how to defend ourselves against 4GW invaders and hostiles in the places we live than will be posted overseas as soldiers. The proper responses for civilians dealing with conflict within Europe will be very different than the solutions for soldiers fighting in the Middle East. This manual was not written to address that question, but there will certainly be demand for solutions to that challenge in the decades to come. The author’s pronouncement that “Fourth Generation war at home is significantly easier to win than Fourth Generation war abroad” will be cold comfort to the families of the victims of 11/13/15 in Paris, to rape victims in Sweden and Rotherham or victims of racist gang crime in Baltimore or LA. Again, this is not a criticism of this book, which achieves what it set out to do, but a call for a complementary volume.

There will be 4GW
By Ashtar Command
This book by conservative columnist William Lind expands on the themes set out in his shorter work “The Four Generations of Modern War”. Lind's ideas on modern warfare are similar to those of Israeli military historian Martin van Creveld. The basic perspective is a pessimistic one. The power of the modern state and its military is in decline. For that reason, wars will be fought by a wide variety of non-state actors, including clans, tribes, terrorist groups and crime syndicates. This is similar to the formation of war bands predicted by Toynbee. The process has already begun and will escalate even more in the future. Lind calls the strategy and tactics of the war bands “4th Generation Warfare”. It's essentially a form of more or less generalized guerilla struggle. Lind clearly had Iraq in mind when writing his book. Modern states are still stuck in “2nd Generation Warfare” and are therefore singularly unequipped to deal with the new realities of war. 2GW relies on technological superiority, rigid command structures and equally rigid tactics to “impose order on a chaotic battlefield”. But what if the enemy is invisible and never shows up on the battlefield in the first place? What Lind calls “3rd Generation Warfare” is a version of the German Blietzkrieg, combining superior force and tactical flexibility, but in the end, not even this will work against a 4GW opponent.

Lind's advice is to make the military of the modern state as similar as possible to its 4GW opponents. The task is to “out-guerilla the guerilla”. The troops must fraternize with the locals and attempt to win their hearts and minds by providing protection against irregulars or criminals, taking part in public works projects, and respect their traditions and customs. In many ways, the troops should act more like friendly policemen rather than foreign occupants. The local state should be preserved rather than destroyed. Lind says quite explicitly that cash is even more important than firepower. Yes, the military should attempt to bribe as many influential natives as possible! The best way to combat the 4GW enemy is to mimic its tactics. The army of the future will revolve around light infantry (by which Lind means tactically flexible infantry units often working behind enemy lines), rather than high tech gadgets such as drones. The key word is “de-escalation”. Lind believes that the military must have an explicit exit plan from the start, since a prolonged occupation of a foreign nation simply isn't feasible. Clearly, the author doesn't believe in any grandiose schemes for “nation-building” under US tutelage!

Lind admits that there is another way of fighting 4GW enemies: to use modern military superiority to escalate the conflict in a truly brutal manner. He calls it “the Hama model”, after Syrian Baathist leader Hafez al-Assads bloody suppression of a Sunni Muslim revolt in the city of Hama in 1982. Within a month, about 20,000 people were killed and large portions of Hama destroyed. The catch is that such an escalation must be swift and catch the rebels unaware. It can't be repeated on a regular basis. Prolonged brutality will simply stiffen the resistance (and perhaps the calls for international intervention), but so will too little brutality once you decide on the “Hama” option. It would be interesting to know what the author said about the US attack on Fallujah in Iraq…

Even more controversially, Lind suggests that 4GW is the future even of the Western nations. Yes, the war bands and irregulars are coming to *your* backyard, and Lind believes the Western governments have committed a terrible mistake in permitting mass immigration from the Third World. The immigrants are the material from which future war bands will be formed. Lind believes that the Western militaries nevertheless have an advantage on their home turf, precisely because it is their turf. The problem is creating conditions for good governance. If the governments aren't seen as legitimate, the Western nations could become failed states in the grip of both foreign and local war bands.

“4th Generation Warfare Handbook” is somewhat uneven, with some chapters being mostly of interest to specialists in the subject. Other chapters are written in a narrative (“fiction”) style, which I personally found annoying. I also get the feeling that Lind might be somewhat nave! Was it really likely that Sunni Muslims in Iraq would tolerate the presence of US troops if they had bribed some notables or built a couple of health clinics? Under any post-Saddam constitutional arrangement, the Sunnis were bound to lose their privileged position. Conversely, “letting the state be” in post-Saddam Iraq would have meant keeping Sunnis (and Baathists) in power at the expense of the Shia majority – not a clever option either if you want to keep on good terms with the local Joes or Alis! Historically, “the Hama model” has been used more often than the more friendly model suggested by Lind. And when the Hama model fails to reach its objective, there's always genocide…

William Lind actually sounds pretty sympathetic! Let's hope his models will work. If not, we will get many new confirmations that war (including 4GW) indeed is hell.

Microcontrollers are used in the industrial world to control many types of equipment, ranging from consumer to specialized devices. They have replaced older types of controllers, including microprocessors. Also, there is a growing need for off-line support of a computer's main processor. The demand will grow as more and more equipment uses more intelligence. Applications range from controlling engines in modern automobiles to controlling laser printers and other computer peripherals. One consumer application is a washing machine controller that adjusts the wash cycle based on load size, fabric type, and amount of dirt.

This book illustrates how to use a popular microcontroller, the Motorola 68HC11. The 68HC11 is relatively easy to work with, yet it has most of the features essential for a complete control system. Thus the student of control automation can use it to work with control systems at the component level. The interested layperson can also use it as a tool to understand and experiment with computer and data communications systems.

The goals of the fourth edition remain the same as those of earlier editions. The book provides the background knowledge needed to understand and use microcontrollers in general as well as the 68HC11 specifically. It starts at an introductory level, explaining the applications and origins of microcontrollers. Next, a programmer's view of the machine is developed. Finally, we describe machine hardware and how to connect it to the outside world for control applications.

You will find the book useful in learning how to use the 68HC11. Original manufacturers' data books do not provide the background explanations that a novice needs. Experienced users will find the book to be a useful accompaniment to the manufacturer's original documentation.

The book can be used as a textbook in introductory, interfacing, and industrial control courses. To use the book, you should have a background understanding of digital logic and numbering systems. Some computer programming knowledge is useful but not absolutely essential. Although this book was written to be used in college courses, the interested hacker or hobbyist should find the material useful for self-study. Others with a formal education from the past should also find useful information. The book can accompany hands-on exercises using a microcontroller training kit or simulation software. Where possible, concepts are presented generically, to help you understand other microcontrollers and related devices.

To permit flexible use of the book, we have organized it into five parts:

Part 1. Microcontroller technology is introduced in Chapter 1: what it is, how it evolved, and how to use it. The chapter continues with explanations of terminology and parts of the microcontroller. Finally, essential memory concepts are reviewed.
Part 2. Chapters 2 to 4 cover programming concepts, the language used to instruct the microcontroller, and how to use registers and memory. Also covered is how to produce, use, and document programs.
Part 3. Chapters 5 to 7 cover operation of the chip itself. Topics include the system bus, operating modes, clocked operation, and memory technology.
Part 4. Chapters 8 to 12 deal with the subsystems for parallel, serial, programmable timer, and analog interfacing. The basic software techniques to use these systems are presented. Also introduced are some common hardware designs used to connect the microcontroller to sensors and actuators. An overview of all subsystems without the processor-specific details is presented in Chapter 8.
Part 5. Control methods are illustrated in Chapter 13, where it is shown how programs use the subsystems for control applications. Chapters 14 and 15 cover the industry to date, presenting a survey of typical applications, choices in choosing microcontrollers, and characteristics of other microcontrollers.

Typically, an introductory course would include Parts 1 and 2. We also recommend including Chapter 8. Advanced or more intensive courses would include Parts 3 and 4. Either type of course can use Part 5, provided that Chapter 8 is also covered.

Although the book contains some data sheets, it is not a complete reference. The reader should refer to the literature listed in Appendix C for complete data.

FOURTH EDITION CHANGES

To acknowledge the prominence of C programming, this edition introduces C programming earlier and uses C program examples throughout. These changes also reflect the use of version 6 of the ICC11 cross compiler. There is more coverage of the 68HCI 1E9 with a de-emphasis on the `A' type parts because Motorola has discontinued their production. This edition also includes a CD-ROM (described in Appendix H) with source code, a special demo version of the THRSim11 simulator, ICC11 demo C compiler, cross assembler, fuzzy logic tools, and assorted electronic design tools. The simulator is a welcome addition because it provides a handy way to explore programming and interfacing concepts. Appendix H includes an introductory tutorial for using the simulator. Appendix C lists EVBU substitutes. Note that Motorola has discontinued its educational discount for the 68HC 11 EVBU (replacing it with the 68HC 12 EVBU). The chapters now list objectives, a long overdue pedagogical improvement.

HOW TO USE THIS BOOK

Most important to success when using this book is an enthusiasm for computer and related technology. If you are already familiar with assembly language programming, you may wish to skim Chapters 1 and 2 for new information instead of reading them in detail. If you are not familiar with digital logic and binary numbers, you should also read Appendix F.

We use generic principles whenever possible. After studying this book, you should be able to work with any microcontroller, but it is necessary to cover a specific microcontroller in depth in order to understand them all in general. We have chosen the 68HC11; however, there are many variations of the 68HC 11. When explaining specific details, we generally refer to the 68HC11E9, unless we state otherwise.

To understand microcontrollers, you also have to know a lot of jargon. You cannot understand the concepts without knowing the jargon—but you cannot understand the jargon without knowing the concepts. We get around this dilemma by introducing details step by step.

The appendices provide references and further clarification of terms used in the book. Appendix A lists the details of the 68HC 11 instructions used throughout the book. You will probably use it often. Appendix B is the quick reference section. Use it as a cross-reference to look up other 68HC 11 details as needed. Appendices A and B are necessary if you do not have 68HC 11 data sheets or a manual.

Most terms are explained in the text as required. New terms are indicated in italic type when they first occur in the text. You may wish to reread earlier sections of the book to review terms when used in another context. The glossary provides an additional reference.

A lot of abbreviations are used in the technical literature. Unfortunately, these frustrate many readers. In practice, most technical data books use abbreviations, often without explanation. In this book each abbreviation is defined the first time it is used, and many are redefined upon subsequent appearances. You can also find a list of abbreviations after the glossary.

Sources of further information on some topics are listed in Appendix C. Also listed are suppliers for some of the commercially available products mentioned in the book. We encourage you to use the bulletin board mentioned in Appendix C.

Some conventions are defined in Appendix D. Since there are many ways to do the same thing, we felt it necessary to define a standard way. The conventions are those used by many in the industry. For example, we use Motorola's dollar sign ($) convention to refer to a method of coding numbers (in this case the sign does not indicate dollars). This ensures that we all understand the sign to have the same meaning.

The header files used by some program examples are listed in Appendix E. Note that a header file is explained in Appendix E.

The basics of digital logic and number conversions are explained in Appendix F. You should read this section early if you are not already familiar with these topics.

If you need basic information about waveforms, refer to Appendix G.

Finally, we included a reference to Internet resources and the enclosed CD-ROM in Appendix H.

SUPPLEMENTS

Excellent Introduction to Microcontrollers and the 68HC11
By A Customer
This book is a well written and a well organized intorduction to microcontrollers and contains a very extensive coverage of the Motorola 68HC11 in particular. As an engineer who has worked with microprocessors since the first one (the Intel 4004), I find this book to be a good mix of basic material and more detailed info for someone wanting to use the 68HC11. Anyone of average intelligence and a basic background in computers and math should have no problem understanding it. There are a few typos (as in most complex books of this type) but they are rather easy to resolve from the context in most cases. For example in one of the early chapters, he is talking about a code example that does a 16-bit addition and refers to the LDD instruction instead of the ADD instruction as the one doing the addition. These are minor compared to the extensive and detailed coverage given of this popular microcontroller. Many useful charts are also included that make the book a great reference source when writing programs. The only omission that bothered me was no mention of the Microchip PIC family of microcontrollers in the chapter describing other popular families. The PIC is a big competitor of the 68HC11. They are both very capable and widely used. Overall, I think you would be hard pressed to find a better book with such extensive coverage of the 68HC11 as well as a lot of hardware interfacing details and application examples. This 2nd edition has made a lot of improvements of the previous edition and is well worth the investment.

Good 68hc11 Book
By A Customer
This is by far one of the best books ever written for the 68hc11. I don't know what the others are talking about. Have you ever tryed to read Motorola's (Pink Book ) data book and reference book? They are pretty confusioning, not enough detail. In my option the author does an excellent job of presenting the 6811 with enough examples. The 6811 is the best 8 bit processor invented. This book is a must buy for quick reference.

Very helpful for beginners
By A Customer
I find the book very helpful because:
1. It introduces the topics in a lucid way through examples.
2. It has lots of practice problems with solutions.
3. It teaches one how to delve into the Motorola data book. Some important pages of the data book have been reproduced in the appendix of this book, and there are practice problems that tell you how to use those pages to find relevant info.
There are unfortunately a few not-too-good points:
1. Typos. Yes, there are quite a few of them. BUT, the author's webpage has an errata list for both the 2nd as well as the 3rd edition.
2. Some of the listings are incomplete, eg one listing uses the line
STAA TCTL2,X
yet nowhere in or around the listing it is mentioned what value TCTL2 really stands for, and what is currently stored in X. The lines
TCTL2 EQU $21
REGBAS EQU $1000
LDX #REGBAS
are omited from the listing without any mention! All these left out things are summed up in an appendix, but you will notice that only when you get familiar with the book. The symbols like
REGBAS or TCTL2 that are defined in one chapter and used in more than one chapters , are not clearly cross-referenced. They do not even appear in the index! But once you get used to the book, it is only a minor flaw.
Finally, if you are a beginner then you should better make sure that you have an assembler that understands the assembly language used in the book. It would have been wonderful if the book provided its own assembler and debugger, but it doesn't. Getting the first assembly program to run is not always easy. I personally used the software that came with another book:
Embedded microcomputer systems by Valvano. Spasov's book and Valvano's software make a wonderful team to assist a beginning student.

The Hadith: Articulating the Beliefs and Constructs of Classical Islam (Critical Concepts in Islamic Studies)From Routledge

The Prophetic traditions of Islam, which are commonly referred to as the hadiths (literally: ‘reports’), preserve the sum and substance of the utterances, deeds, directives, and descriptive anecdotes connected with the life of the Prophet Muhammad and his Companions. Together with the Qur’an, the hadiths provide the religion of Islam with its principal scriptural sources.

The collection features an accessible and informative introduction which presents an outline of the significance of the hadiths within the religious tradition while also reviewing classical scholarship devoted to the literature of the traditions; moreover, the introduction decisively sets into context the academic debates and arguments which are fleshed out in the articles selected. It also charts developments in the academic study of hadiths, summing up the current state of the field and features a detailed bibliography listing primary classical sources germane to the field of Prophetic traditions together with recent research monographs and articles devoted to the subject.

This Major Work provides an authoritative collection of the seminal research articles produced by western academic scholarship on the subject of the hadith over the past century, including recent papers on the subject. In bringing together the finest examples of scholarship devoted to the hadith and the classical literature that surrounds it, these volumes provide an indispensable reference resource for academics, research institutions, governmental organizations, and those with a general interest in Arabic and Islamic Studies, Religious Studies, Arabic Cultural Studies, and Middle East History.

Review

The Ḥadīth. Edited by Mustafa Shah. Critical Concepts in Islamic Studies. London:

Routledge, 2009. Pp. 1,704. 650.00.

This is a magnificent collection of essays on the subject of ḥadīth scholarship. The

Routledge series of ‘Critical Concepts in Islamic Studies’, for those who are

unfamiliar with the format, marks an important new initiative in the publication of

material on the subject. Unlike the Variorum presentation with which most of us have

long been familiar, the articles in these volumes are completely re-typeset in a

common format and each volume is continuously paginated, all of which gives a

much greater homogeneity and elegance to the whole. All the collections amount to

between three and six full-length volumes. Among the other collections in the series

which are likely to be of interest to students of early Islamic studies are Colin Turner’s

collection on The Koran, Paul Luft and Colin Turner on Shi’ism, and Lloyd Ridgeon’s

two collections on Sufism and Islam and Religious Diversity.

In four volumes Mustafa Shah has collected no fewer than 61 papers reflecting many

different approaches to the subject. All the papers come from the Western academic

tradition and all of them are in English. The editor stresses that they are all peer

reviewed, though quite how far the term ‘peer review’ can really be used of

Goldziher’s work is debatable. Suffice it to say that all the articles and chapters (for

some of the pieces chosen are particularly important sections from full-length books)

are by established scholars in the field, and I think it is fair to say that every single one

of them makes important and relevant points. There are, so to speak, no weak links.

The material is arranged by topic and themes, though, as Shah points out, many of the

themes overlap and many of the articles deal with more than one of them. Volume I is

concerned with ‘Codification, Authenticity’, Volume II with ‘Isnāds: Transmission,

Terminology and the Issue of Dating’, Volume III with ‘Scholarship, Perspectives and

Criticism’ and Volume IV with ‘Narrative, Context and Content’. In addition to the

‘Introduction’, there is also a chronological table which arranges all the articles by

date of publication, ranging from Goldziher in 1889–90 (although his ‘Ḥadīth and

Sunna’ is presented in Stern’s 1967 English translation) to Jonathan Brown’s ‘How do

we know early ḥadīth critics did matn criticism and why is it so hard to find?’ of 2008.

This is a long time span, though it is worth noting that Goldziher’s contribution is the

only one which dates from before 1950, and the collection as a whole demonstrates

the vast explosion of scholarly interest in ḥadīth studies which was characteristic of

the second half of the twentieth century and shows no signs of diminishing in the

twenty-first.

The book opens with a substantial introduction by the editor. Considering the wealth

and variety of material in the four volumes, his summary is a masterpiece of clarity

and erudition, introducing the reader to all the main themes of the collection. In

particular, he takes Albert Berg’s division of scholars of ḥadīth into two separate

camps, the sceptical and the sanguine, and sees how different scholars fit into it.

There can be no doubt that the overriding theme in the collection, and indeed in the

whole scholarly discussion, is the question of dating and authenticity. The first paper

sets the agenda. It is often said that all Western philosophy is essentially footnotes to

Plato: it sometimes seems as if all of academic Islamic studies are essentially footnotes

to Goldziher. It was his essay, reproduced here, which raised for the first time the idea

that the ḥadīth as we have them now were essentially generated in the second/eighth

and third/ninth centuries to propagate a vision of Islam which had little if anything, to

do with the Islam of the time of the Prophet. Few now would accept his image of the

Umayyads as arrogant and godless tyrants, indeed recent scholarship has tended to

enhance the reputation of ʿAbd al-Malik, among others, as a serious figure in the

development of Islamic law, but his view of the elaboration of ḥadīth as a deliberate

construct of learned men still commands some support. And in the footsteps of

Goldziher comes, of course, Schacht with his almost blanket dismissal of Prophetic

traditions.

In the other, sanguine, camp Shah places Nabia Abbott, a brilliant textual historian

whose work is sometimes underestimated, Fuat Sezgin and Mustafa Azami, all of

whom stress the antiquity of the earliest written ḥadīth. At the same time he points out

that the debate has in many ways moved beyond this sharp polarisation: Harald

Motzki, for example, seeing the apparent dichotomy as far too clear cut to reflect the

reality of many much more nuanced points of view. At the same time Gregor

Schoeler’s work on the complex interaction between the oral and the written has

added a whole new element to the discussion.

One of the great strengths of a collection like this is that it enables the student or the

scholar approaching the subject for the first time to gain an overview of the whole

question or rather of all the questions. Shah’s choice of papers means that we can see

all the great names at their most cogent, staking out their territory clearly, without the

reader having to track down rare and obscure articles in hard-to-find periodicals. And

there are pieces on subjects that are all too easily overlooked, like Maribel Fierro’s

essay on the introduction of ḥadīth into Andalusia. The final volume moves away

from issues of dating and reliability into interesting discussions of the more literary

aspects of ḥadīth narratives, with chapters on narrative discourse and modern literary

theory, ethics and aesthetics in ḥadīth, dreams as means to evaluate ḥadīth and a

feminist interpretation of knowledge, women and gender in the ḥadīth.

This is an excellently chosen and carefully edited selection of papers. In many ways it

is a much better introduction to ḥadīth studies than any single text book could be,

because it gives an insight into the whole scope of the subject, not just the well

rehearsed variety of opinions on dating and authenticity, but the wide variety of

different approaches with which people come to the subject.

Protective Relaying for Power Generation Systems (Power Engineering (Willis)), by Donald Reimert

Power outages have considerable social and economic impacts, and effective protection schemes are crucial to avoiding them. While most textbooks focus on the transmission and distribution aspects of protective relays, Protective Relaying for Power Generation Systems is the first to focus on protection of motors and generators from a power generation perspective. It also includes workbook constructions that allow students to perform protection-related calculations in Mathcad and Excel.

This text provides both a general overview and in-depth discussion of each topic, making it easy to tailor the material to students' needs. It also covers topics not found in other texts on the subject, including detailed time decrement generator fault calculations and minimum excitation limit. The author clearly explains the potential for damage and damaging mechanisms related to each protection function and includes thorough derivations of complex system interactions. Such derivations underlie the various rule-of-thumb setting criteria, provide insight into why the rules-of-thumb work and when they are not appropriate, and are useful for post-incident analysis. The book's flexible approach combines theoretical discussions with example settings that offer quick how-to information.

Protective Relaying for Power Generation Systems integrates fundamental knowledge with practical tools to ensure students have a thorough understanding of protection schemes and issues that arise during or after abnormal operation.

"…covers a wide range of topics and can help the reader to achieve basic understanding or deep knowledge of generator and motor protection, thus meeting the needs of both students and professionals… The author… has worked for more than 35 years in the design not only of generator and motor protection systems, but also substation, transmission, and distribution facilities. His system planning experience as well as the preparation and teaching of different protection related courses at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee allow him to present the material in the book in a clear and practical manner."

―PAC World Magazine

"Power engineers and application engineers who work with generator protective devices as well as power engineering students would find this book to be a great hands-on reference that reveals a wealth of information on generator protective relaying for power systems."

Excellent text for those wishing to focus on the electrical protection of machines
By NCS
I work in the protective relaying field, and much of my work centers around machines and protection of machines. I occasionally teach professional development courses related to the protection of generators and motors and I always recommend this book to my course participants as an excellent reference that focuses strictly on machine protection. The book covers all aspects of electrical protection of synchronous machines, and has a chapter on protection of induction motors. I find that it has a good mix of theory and practice, and lists many good references for further study. I use it as a reference for my job and to brush up theory and application that I may not have put to practice in a while. Highly recommended.

Good book but not comprehensive enough
By Mohammad Abdulqader
The book is good. It covers lot of materials on protection of power generation plants. However it lacks the details in many subjects and how to apply the theory.

Absolutely the best in the series!!!!
By cat5fred
After a very disappointing start on the USS North Carolina which seems like it was released eons ago, Kagero has come up with I'd call the second best reference on the most famous ship of WWII. The detail and clarity of the 3D pictures is outstanding! As a modeler now I can *SEE* all the detail missing in today's model kits. Having this book should empower those so inclined to ultra detail your models.

A very competent analysis of the technical aspects of the Bismarck is given, not too tedious, not too terse like some of the Naval Inst. Press books tend to sound like. No ground breaking material as far as naval analysis but folks, the virtue of this book is the stunning graphics. Worth twice the asking price. The authors have shown a rather meteoric rise in their abilities to depict these ships and in the process make this series an indispensable source for modelers and naval aficionados.

I've been comparing this book page by page to the one I call the best graphical source yet published on the Bismarck, the out-of-this-world book by Josef Kaiser 'Bismarck - Das Original', which unfortunately hasn't been yet translated to English, but like this book, is a walk-around from bow to stern, crow's nest to deck level but using real, period photos, most of them never published before. In this comparison, I feel that Goralski and Nowak have come very, very close to matching the Bismarck's structural details. Kind of eerie in a way, based on the history and what this ship represents.

My verdict: get it while it is still reasonably cheap. Once it is out of publication, watch the prices of this gem soar to stratospheric levels. I guarantee it. Now, if Kagero could show some interest in aircraft carriers, oh, that would be sublime.

The biggest and best yet in the series
By Jim Davis
This is the 9th entry in Kagero's "Super Drawings in 3D" series (Kagero No. 16009). Like the other books in the series it is in European standard A4 format (8-1/4" x 11-3/4"). It is a stapled card cover. It has 96 pages not including the card covers although they are included in the page numbering.

It follows the same format as the other books in the series. There is a brief text section (8 pages here) where the background, design, details, and operational history are covered, supported by numerous tables. There follows the heart of the book - page after page of stunningly detailed CAD (computer aided design) drawings of the exterior of the Bismarck. The beauty of the CAD approach is that the ship is modelled in cyberspace. Once that is done the "virtual ship" can be viewed from any angle with lighting from any direction. It would be interesting to know what software was used in modelling the ship but there is no hint of that in the book. If there is sufficient interest Kagero could produce another book with completely new views. They seem to be doing just that with their new Type VIIC U-boat book.

There is little to complain of. The translation appears to be quite competent. Only the phrase "on board of" instead of the natural "on board" grates. Also the phrase "conning tower" is used to denote the entire forward superstructure in contrast to English usage where it means only the armored command and control position. The book refers to the latter as the "armored conning tower".

But these are minor complaints. This book will appeal to modellers and general enthusiasts alike. One hopes that once Kagero has milked all it can from book sales they will consider releasing a view only download of the CAD model. Highly recommended.

Magic of CGI
By Michael Dunham
I have an extensive library covering K.M.Bismarck,and I purchased this book out of curiosity more than a need.It is breathtaking,in layout, accuracy, and would be either a perfect modellers aid,or in my case,a substitute, for I am no longer able to work miniatures. For any enthusiast of the Kriegsmarine,or capital ships of the era,it is a must have.
One can spend hours just absorbing the images, and per my references, more accurate work is just not to be found.Included also is an excellent set of 1:350 plans as an insert, not bound in.The plans alone made it a great purchase.
