Great advice on a critical aspect of leadership

Bad bosses are oblivious to the fact that leading people requires humility, savvy, authenticity, and keen interpersonal skills, according to Jeb Blount in this book. Many organizations have elaborate incentive schemes in place designed to improve employee satisfaction and retention, yet fail to deal with the one thing which causes most employee dissatisfaction: poor leadership.

The book provides a broad range of leadership wisdom, including:

* Leadership success is directly related to the quality of the relationships that leaders build and sustain with the people they lead.
* You need your people more than they need you.
* Because you are the boss, people watch and analyse your every move, looking for meaning and clues as to what you are thinking.
* If you put the interests of your followers before your own, that helps you build an emotional connection which opens them to accepting your coaching and directing.
* Leaders maximise their own performance by doing whatever it takes to help their followers be more successful.
* Trust between leaders and followers is built by leaders doing what they say they will do, keeping promises, and behaving in a consistent and professional manner.
* Positive emotional experiences strengthen a relationship and engender loyalty sufficient to withstand difficult conditions.

There are many different books on leadership, offering many different opinions about what leaders should and should not do. In my opinion this book is one of the better ones. Instead of prescribing a broad variety of different actions that leaders are supposed to take, it concentrates on the critical aspect of leadership which is most often overlooked: the relationship which a leader has with his or her followers. I would recommend this book to anyone who is responsible for supervising someone else.

Jeb has outlined the five key levers that will give an aspiring leader the blueprint to become a successful, proven leader. I have been following Jeb's teachings for about nine years, and I must admit that my career has benefited from his series of books and podcasts. I'm a firm believer of "the proof is in the pudding" and I can truly say that when I started listening and following Jeb's teaching, my career went from an individual Sales Rep in Birmingham, AL to a Regional Sales Manager managing half of the country in New York City. I highly recommend this book.

Whose Chair Will You Sit In?

Really?

After spending a few seconds remembering some of my bosses, I had to agree.

And I imagine you will, too as you remember.

Proof positive that yes, we need another book on leadership, and yes, one written differently from the typical. We need one that will get us out of the dentist's chair and into the boss'...

Great trauma/emergency nursing text for both novice and experienced professionals. Both text & illustrations are great references. Though this 6th edition was published in 2006, it is still the latest edition released for the TNCC certification.

UPDATE: January 10, 2014

The first TNCC courses using 7th edition materials will begin after February 2014. I have not yet seen a 7th edition text available for TNCC students - only updated instructor materials.

A short essay on trench raiding in WW1

When I purchased this I did not realise how short it was.This was my first Kindle purchase.It really is a quite short essay based on secondary sources & unfortunately lacking in depth & details.It would have been good to have first person accounts of trench raids & the German response.There are no illustrations of trench raiding weapons or for that matter anything else.The author concludes that trench raids were ultimately not worthwhile but fails to provide cogent evidence to substantiate his view.Certainly both sides did trench raids right to the end of the war & there was a perceived need to dominate the battlefield.It is an easy read which took me only a couple of minutes but ultimately I found this work unsatisfying.

A pretty good read

A pretty good read. Factual, personal, bloody, but, not overly gory. I doubt I would have been able to do these missions and I survived quite a bit of combat in Vietnam. These were some very tough hombres and braver than badgers.

Michelle Godfrey felt the dust of the unpaved road all over her jeans. She couldn't really see her pants. Her eyes were full of hot tears. It was just one more argument, one more heartache.

Her stepmother, Roberta, was determined to sell off everything her father had owned. He'd only been dead for three weeks. Roberta had wanted to bury him in a plain pine box with no flowers, not even a church service. Michelle had dared her stepmother's hot temper and appealed to the funeral director.

The kindly man, a friend of her father's, had pointed out to Roberta that Comanche Wells, Texas, was a very small community. It would not sit well with the locals if Roberta, whom most considered an outsider, was disrespectful of the late Alan Godfrey's wishes that he be buried in the Methodist church cemetery beside his first wife. The funeral director was soft-spoken but eloquent. He also pointed out that the money Roberta would save with her so-called economy plans, would be a very small amount compared to the outrage she would provoke. If she planned to continue living in Jacobs County, many doors would close to her.

Roberta was irritated at the comment, but she had a shrewd mind. It wouldn't do to make people mad when she had many things to dispose of on the local market, including some cattle that had belonged to her late husband.

She gave in, with ill grace, and left the arrangements to Michelle. But she got even. After the funeral, she gathered up Alan's personal items while Michelle was at school and sent them all to the landfill, including his clothes and any jewelry that wasn't marketable.

Michelle had collapsed in tears. That is, until she saw her stepmother's wicked smile. At that point, she dried her eyes. It was too late to do anything. But one day, she promised herself, when she was grown and no longer under the woman's guardianship, there would be a reckoning.

Two weeks after the funeral, Roberta came under fire from Michelle's soft-spoken minister. He drove up in front of the house in a flashy red older convertible, an odd choice of car for a man of the cloth, Michelle thought. But then, Reverend Blair was a different sort of preacher.

She'd let him in, offered him coffee, which he refused politely. Roberta, curious because they never had visitors, came out of her room and stopped short when she saw Jake Blair.

He greeted her. He even smiled. They'd missed Michelle at services for the past two weeks. He just wanted to make sure everything was all right. Michelle didn't reply. Roberta looked guilty. There was this strange rumor he'd heard, he continued, that Roberta was preventing her stepdaughter from attending church services. He smiled when he said it, but there was something about him that was strangely chilling for a religious man. His eyes, ice-blue, had a look that Roberta recognized from her own youth, spent following her father around the casinos in Las Vegas, where he made his living. Some of the patrons had that same penetrating gaze. It was dangerous.

"But of course, we didn't think the rumor was true," Jake Blair continued with that smile that accompanied the unblinking blue stare. "It isn't, is it?"

Roberta forced a smile. "Um, of course not." She faltered, with a nervous little laugh. "She can go whenever she likes."

"You might consider coming with her," Jake commented. "We welcome new members in our congregation."

"Me, in a church?" She burst out laughing, until she saw the two bland faces watching her. She sounded defensive when she added, "I don't go to church. I don't believe in all that stuff."

Jake raised an eyebrow. He smiled to himself, as if at some private joke. "At some point in your life, I assure you, your beliefs may change."

"Unlikely," she said stiffly.

He sighed. "As you wish. Then you won't mind if my daughter, Carlie, comes by to pick Michelle up for services on Sunday, I take it?"

Roberta ground her teeth together. Obviously the minister knew that since Michelle couldn't drive, Roberta had been refusing to get up and drive her to church. She almost refused. Then she realized that it would mean she could have Bert over without having to watch for her stepdaughter every second. She pursed her lips. "Of course not," she assured him. "I don't mind at all."

"Wonderful. I'll have Carlie fetch you in time for Sunday school each week and bring you home after church, Michelle. Will that work for you?"

Better late than never!

I read the book, Man of Ice, many years ago, and reread it recently. In the author's note, she mentioned that "Maggie's Dad" was the prequel to Man of Ice, so I bought and read it. What a great novel! While I loved the Man of Ice, I also loved Antonia and Powell's story; it was really emotional and heartfelt. The novel made me cry and laugh, and it challenged my sense of fairness. At first, I found Maggie to be a challenging child, but the more I read, the more she stole my heart. Ms. Palmer did a stellar job with this story! This will be another keeper.

Texas Born is a great story of love, adventure, intrigue, with sensual parts added for spice. I have never not liked a Diana Palmer book since I started reading her books over ten years ago.
Maggie's Dad is a heartwarming story of love, lies, heartbreak and happy endings. Maggie is an unloved child due to truth and lies told all her nine year life. Maggie has low self-esteem, thinks her parents don't love and so acts out for attention. Be sure to have plenty of kleenex handy while you enjoy Maggie, Antonia, and Powell's story

A great read

The first story in this book was outstanding and I enjoyed reading it. The characters were believable and likable,the passion and love making was goodddddd. The second book was soo sad and I was angry that the adults allow bad and hurtful experiences to over flow to a child. To me, Maggie was more of an adult than the adult characters. The ending of book two was outstanding and I will read more books from you.
