Works well for some adult students.

I have always liked the Bastien chord approach to teaching piano, but have often found the Adult course to advance a little too quickly for most students. Be aware that the first few pieces in the Level 2 book are actually easier than some of the pieces found and the end of the Level 1 book. The first unit contains folk songs with varying bass patterns; unit 2 moves into minor scales and keys. This book has worked well for my highly motivated adult student.

Title is accurate... good resource for the 'older beginner'

I had always wanted to learn some piano and read enough music to have a basic understanding. I have started the Bastien series and it yielded results much faster than I had expected. Some of the arrangements are a little different than I'm accustomed, but there is a nice variety of songs/exercises from different musical genres. The lessons build upon each other and the pace seems right.

About the Author
Award-winning journalist and former deputy editor of Elle Decoration, McKenna has also worked as an editor for Channel 4. Working extensively in the gay press he is known for initiating the campaign for gay law reform in the Isle of Man and leading the fight against Clause 25. He is the author of two ground-breaking books about male homosexuality and Aids in the developing world: On the Margins (1996) and The Silent Epidemic (1998). Historical fact written like compelling fiction

This is a much under served area of history - and this book approaches the narrative in the spirit that these 'ladies' lived their lives: highly dramatic, fun and light to read, but with a fascinating and shocking expose of the sexual attitudes (and ignorance of sexual practices) of the day. The book is written as a story that unfolds, so unless you know of Stella and Fanny in advance, it reads like a court room drama. If at all possible, I highly recommend that you don't read up on the story beforehand and immerse yourself in this wonderful world of wigs, sodomy and scandal!

Entertaining and.interesting

Well worth reading for its insights, the author`s witty style makes what could be a dour look into a famous Victorian court case almost fun to read. At same time, the pathos of the situation two young transvestites find themselves is never given short shrift. This is popular history and while there are ample citations, the author is never afraid to speculate. Very enjoyable.

I Love These Fascinating Footnotes From History

Until I saw a review of Neil McKenna's book, I confess I had never even heard of Fanny and Stella. Certainly, if a novelist had invented them, readers would have been hardpressed to believe that such flamboyant, extravagant, larger than life characters would have dared to behave this way in Victorian Britain. But they did, and their story is told in great style by the author. In fact, I can't imagine any other way to tell this story. As I read it, I felt as if a chatty friend had dropped in for tea and cakes, eager to impart a really juicy scandal. And he did. And I loved it. Highly recommended for broadminded adults.

Inadequate as an introductory philosophy text

"Roots of Wisdom" is supposed to function as an introductory philosophy text. Such texts should present the most important issues in philosophy in a clear, coherent, and easy-to-understand fashion, while at the same time giving the student an appreciation of the history of philosophy as well as the tools to learn how to reason philosophically. During my three decades of teaching philosophy, I have come across a number of texts that accomplish this goal. Sad to say, "Roots of Wisdom" fails in this endeavor.

It's not that its author, Helen Buss Mitchell, doesn't try. The text discusses the various areas of philosophy (theory of knowledge, ethics, metaphysics, political philosophy, etc.), talks about some of the main figures in the history of philosophy, and attempts to show the reader how to reason in a philosophical fashion. However, the attempt to integrate these falls flat. Instead of a tapestry, we have a collection of random pieces of cloth. As a result, the format of this book is both confusing and confused. Moreover, although the book is intended for introductory students, the prose frequently becomes turgid and boring. Delving into esoterica often obscures the more important issues. This is not what one wants in an introductory text.
