Theoretically, the flow of explainations is Okay. The problem is that it contains too much material for one semester course(for an introductory couse), too much math and examples. It also lacks a CAD package such as matlab and simulink to support the book. The package becomes a must for a current textbook nowadays. More clear concepts rather than too much math examples and more practical application examples are hopeful.

It's got lots of maths...

But as an undergrad with GPA 5.8 (~distinction), this book really doesn't explain to ME the maths in an engineering context. For example, Chapter 3, with Orthonormal/Orthogonal signals, had me completely left in the dark as to why, as part of my job as a microelectronic engineer, I would want to orthonormalise a bunch of signals, even though the introductory paragraph goes:
"Orthogonal representations of signals are of general importance in solving many engineering problems. Two of the reasons this is so are that it is mathematically convenient to represent arbitrary signals as a weighted sum of orthogonal waveforms, since many of the calculations involving signals are simplified by using such a representation and that it is possible to visualize the signal as a vector in an orthogonal coordinate system..."
It then shows me some square waves that are apparently "orthonormal" and proceeds to dive straight in from there with the maths. In my subject we wrote a matlab program to show the orthonormalised version of a bunch of exponential signals (t^n where n=0..5); now /those/ final waveforms helped me understand better, but still..
Personally I find a lot of the maths quite ugly (orthonormalisation is just an example that could have been explained better), which I guess is the nature of the subject. But then maths isn't really my strength (I get Credits for my maths subjects) - and perhaps other readers find this book more inspiring. I have talked about this book with fellow students and I can only conclude (personally) that students with only an average ability/interest in maths will perhaps struggle with some of the proofs and find themselves "just remembering".
Perhaps this is simply a property of the subject in general, in which case I'm not as smart as I think I am, but I haven't read any other books to compare. The author clearly knows his stuff, but I don't - I study 5 other subjects full time and I do some contract work. It seems he has forgotten that things aren't necessarily as obvious to the reader as they are to him. Actually, it seems this is the case with my current lecturer also, so I'm really not liking "Signals and Systems" at the moment.. especially since my copy of this book I [bought] AUD for was stolen before I really had a chance to go through it.
Lots of detail, but probably too much. If this is you're only recommended text, go to your lectures. This book appears to be the "algebra of signals", and no more.

Math, Math, Math, Few Concepts

Overall this books is only okay. It emphasizes formulas and procedure way too much. Concepts are short, if concepts are explained at all. Basically, it lacks the necessary theory.

A review from someone who actually read the whole book

As someone who made it past page three, I can say that this book is pretty fantastic. It approaches religion from a sociological perspective. About half of any given chapter explains historical examples of the topic being discussed, whether it's emergent religions, cults, alternative religions, etc. The remaining half of the chapter usually explains the concepts academically. At its heart, the book explains what spirituality and religion can do for their practitioners, and at what levels they can do it. Fantastic book. Very accessible, very educational. Don't trust someone to review a book if they haven't made it past the first chapter.

Puerile Premise for the Whole Anti-Intellectual Affair

Thank the Deity that there are some real highlights in academic study of religion, like Charles Taylor, because otherwise it would be a very depressing wasteland of half-baked thinkers. And it would make one despair of the entire field. There is a strong need,seemingly, in these wobbly minds to shore-up an essentially anti-intellectual approaches, so that they so not have to get too specific historically. And one suspects that lurking underneath is the need to leave a conceptual space of non-criticism for some view of religious matters that does not need a salutary check by delimitable facts. That this book falls into this category is clear right from the start, in the most egregious way, on p. 3: "[Spirituality] exists as a feeling, rather than as an observable pattern of behavior or set of beliefs." Well, this is one of the most ridiculous things I have from an "academic" in a long time, and as someone specializing in religion, completely unconscionable. First, it is simply false in human religious history that various spritualities, be they group or individual, are not characterized by quite analyzable patterns of belief, pattern of cultural behavior, and even using past personal documents like letters and literary works, a very definable ethos, capable of being limned with precision. What this blowzy thinker Lundskow here wants is to stake out some realm where he can speculate with no real historical checks apparently. Only historical anecdote or opinion that fits what he wants to say anyways. How tedious. Yuck! Second, as a more contemporary matter, this contention is also very faulty, but its fault seems to have a cryptic, polemical purpose. For logically if "spirituality" has in this man's stated premise only "feelings", and nothing regularly observable then what he can only be basing this on is, again logically, some special sense he personally has, even if he flowers it up with anecdotal facts and historical referents, which predictably, he seems to have done. There is some zone in his theorizng which will be uncheckable by historical referent at all, for that is his very state premise, and even purpose! Most sadly, what is most wrong with this effort from the start, is only discernible with rather concentrated philosophical reasoning, and thus outside the bailiwick of the Amazonian jungle surely. Still, it is worth pointing out that the in fact a kind of direct, patternless, beliefless and behaviorless state (Zen, Meister Eckhart) is something that some great mystics have alluded to. But that is quite a rare thing by definition, and may be often lost in translation as commonsense would tell us. And even with these special tendencies, there are very strong traditional patterns. Ironically, the puerile premise adduced here actually precludes the possiblity of a real phenomenology of such rare experiences because it has, in blunderbuss fashion, construed general "spirituality" in such a unspecifiable (historially) way. I do not have the stomach to read books like this. If I saw in the sale bin at a book store, the first few pages would make me realize it is a perfect piece of pure vanity.

This book inspires you to reevaluate what you've learned in the past and gives you something to think about. She offers some new ways of seeing things that I have not seen before and challenges common practice in the way astrology, biorhythms and numerology has been interpreted before. She offers you new insight into astrology, numerology and biorhythms. It is one of those books where you stop and think about what you just read. It is very thought provoking and I learned a great deal of new information. Her writing style is clear and uncluttered. It is very easy to understand and follow and you don't ever feel lost or confused. She has had years of experience and has put it all down nicely in this great book. It is a good book to have that will change the way you think about astrology biorhythms and numerology. It is a must have for any library. You can apply the knowledge you get immediately and see that what she says makes sense. I have never heard this information anywhere else and I am glad I stumbled onto this book! A real gem! Whether you are a beginner or are experienced in these fields you will still walk away learning a great deal of new information. I felt like I had discovered some 'secrets' after reading this book and I think you will to!

Dutch madam Hollander scored big with this 1972 autobiography, which became a best seller 15 million copies worldwide. Although the book ended up in the hands of respectable readers, it's little more than smut, as Hollander recounts how she left Holland for a job as a secretary in New York, got bored, and became a prostitute and brothel manager (doesn't everybody?). Three decades later, when you can find raunchier stuff on prime-time TV, this is kind of kitschy. This 30th-anniversary edition contains a new epilog.

Retro Perhaps, But Revised Throughout

"How did YOU first learn about sex?" the reviews ask. Even more importantly, when? I'll confess that I learned about it in the 1970s, and that "a gleefully lusty tour guide named Xaviera Hollander" was responsible. The volume that started it all, "The Happy Hooker: My Own Story" is now titillating a new generation of readers who cut their teeth on matter-of-fact sex guides like "Savage Love" or Dr. Ruth Westheimer's preachy "Sex for Dummies." While many may wonder what all the fuss was about, the truth is that today's twenty-somethings can't begin to imagine how shocking this book was when it first appeared in February 1972, when most of us still gasped after hearing the word "damn" on TV.
Reared in the liberal Netherlands, the author discovers early on that she is bisexual -- and ultimately, it seems, sexually insatiable as well. Relating her own personal experiences in vivid detail, Xaviera chronicles how the sexual revolution of the 1960s hit full stride at the beginning of the 1970s. In the days before AIDS, she would regularly meet people of either sex, engage in small talk with them, and take them to bed before the night was over. Many ships pass in the night this way throughout the book, yet the author's first sexual encounter with a man is strangely given short shrift. Presumably it wasn't as memorable as her many other adventures and escapades. Entering adulthood, she migrates to South Africa at a time when apartheid and other repressive laws are still in force. Bored within a matter of days, she seduces her brother-in-law and spices up his previously boring marriage to her half-sister before moving on to the staid Johannesburg club scene, where she promptly makes a name for herself. In no time she meets an American globetrotter who seems to bring her the satisfaction she craves, and he proposes marriage to her. She accepts, and he invites her to New York, where tension breaks out almost immediately between her and his youth-obsessed, and possibly alcoholic, mother. While subtly exposing the sexual hypocrisy that was part and parcel of our society at the time, Xaviera nonetheless tries to make her relationship with her fianc� work. Secret affairs on both their parts, however, hers always with women, eventually drive them apart.
Frustrated, Xaviera begins sleeping her way across Manhattan and is initially shocked when she is first offered money in exchange for what she thought was just good clean fun. Never the type to say no, she quickly quashes her misgivings and, in what some critics see as a parody of the traditional American work ethic, begins working her way up from meeting her clients in seedy tenements in Greenwich Village to setting her own hours at more chic "houses of pleasure" in the fashionable East Fifties. She climbs the proverbial ladder of success by working for two competing madams and then, in spite of police harassment, setting up a service of her own when one of her former bosses retires to get married. Along the way we're introduced to a gallery of eccentrics, some harmless, many menacing, who populate the demimonde of prostitution, a profession society at large still condemns as a crime that warrants punishment. You'll learn, among other things, why Greek men are her favorite lovers, and why she left Swinging Amsterdam during its heyday.
This "30th Anniversary Edition" actually tones down a lot of the material found in the original. Xaviera's former "fag" friends, whom she sometimes patronizes, are now "gay," for instance, and her encounter with a German shepherd in South Africa, of which she once wrote, "I'd be a moral fraud if I ignored it," is eliminated completely. One chapter, originally entitled "Biff-Bam-Thank-You-Ma'am," has been completely rewritten as "Whipped (S)cream," with its seamier elements considerably softened. Almost ten pages of material have been snipped in all, including much of the moralizing the author once did to justify her lifestyle, which, owing to the occupational hazards she describes in detail, she quickly abandoned after her book became a bestseller. Translated into a dozen languages, "The Happy Hooker" may indeed have changed the way the world regards prostitutes and their trade, and maybe even sex in general, but this expurgated edition proves that our present attitudes toward the subject aren't as liberal as they might have been. The book is thus a window on the past, reframed with modern-day sensibilities. If you can find it, read the original first, to gauge for yourself how far we've come in three decades.

A great read; valuable for its place in history

As a modern twenty-something who wasn't even born when this book first came out in 1972, I enjoyed picking up what is undeniably a part of the history of American sexual culture. I tried to keep in perspective how shocking this book must have been in the 1970's, before our bookshelves and televisions were plasted with frank talk about sexual health and sexual deviance. To me, the opening lesbian girlhood fantasies and the nymphomania (of course all prostitutes love sex) seemed cliched, but I don't doubt Hollander's account of her early sexual life and introduction to the profession.

Hollander had an fascinating life growing up in Holland and moving to America. She was well-educated and very intelligent, and she eloquently explained how a girl of her breeding could become absolutely trapped and imprisioned in an abusive relationship. Her insight on that relationship alone makes this book a worthwhile read.

The book is a true page-turner as Hollander describes her sexual escapades in New York and the ways in which she earned money on her trip to Mexico. Hollander explains all the ins and outs of the high-end prositution business and the complicated formal relationship hookers have with their madam. The end of the book becomes a business treatise on the prostitution world, and it makes for compelling reading.

About the Author
Louis Cha is probably the most widely read author in modern China. His martial arts novels, originally serialized for newspapers, have been adapted for TV, film, cartoons, video games, and even restaurant menus, and they have been translated in numerous languages.

John Minford has translated many works from the Chinese, including two volumes of the Penguin Classics edition of Cao Xueqin's eighteenth-century novel "The Story of the Stone," He is co-editor of the landmark anthology of translations "Classical Chinese Literature,"

Earnshaw is editor-in-chief of Xinhua Finance, managing director of SinoMedia, Ltd. and a director and founder of Park 97 in Shanghai. He speaks Cantonese and Mandarin, and taught himself to read Chinese.

Once upon a time, in 1973, I landed in Hong Kong and sat in the lobby of the Mandarin Hotel and looked at a notice under the glass of the coffee table with identical information in both English and Chinese, laid out as numbered points. I looked at the English "1,2, 3", then at the Chinese squiggles, and saw that one stroke was 1, two strokes 2 and ... three strokes 3! I can read Chinese! It was a simple path from that moment to the translation of the kungfu novel "The Book & The Sword", now published by Oxford University Press.

The novel was written by author Louis Cha, who occupies a position in modern Chinese literature equivalent to that of Charles Dickens, Ian Fleming and Tom Clancy combined. He is a giant, and unfortunately a lonely giant. There are no other authors of his stature in modern Chinese popular literature.

The Book and the Sword is a story that virtually every Chinese person knows, involving kung fu secret society struggles against the Manchu court, the beautiful but tragic Fragant Princess, whose tomb stands outside Kashgar, and the war between the Manchu armies and the Muslim peoples of what is now western China.

It was Cha's first book, serialised in 1955 under his pen name Jin Yong in the Hong Kong newspaper that he founded, Ming Pao. Louis Cha (Jin Yong), is a famous media person, and one of the top authors in the Chinese world. His novels have had a huge impact on the whole of Chinese society and culture, and have been adapted many times for TV, film, audio cassette, strip cartoon and even computer games. He is probably the most-pirated author of all time.

Cha's novels find favour with all levels of Chinese society, from the university professors who savour his command of the Chinese language, to kids who just love the fight scenes. From a western perspective, they provide a window into the Chinese world, revealing its essence through the dreams and fantasies that make up whatever it is to be Chinese. The equivalent, in other words, of Tolkein's success in "Lord of the Rings" in tapping into the sources of northern European culture.

Book & Sword's story has a panoramic sweep which takes as its base a few unbeatable themes - secret societies, king fu masters, the sensational rumour so dear to Chinese hearts that the great Manchu emperor Qian Long was in fact a Chinese and not Manchu. It also mixes in the exotic flavours of central Asia, a lost city in the desert guarded by wolf packs and the unforgettable Fragrant Princess, who ate flowers and exuded a scent that every Chinese man would love to inhale. Me too.

Translating the book took around four years, and the fight scenes were by far the hardest part to get right. It inevitably involved some simplification. But I was as faithful to the spirit of the original as I could be. I took the view that I could omit or simplify, but not add and Mr Cha agreed with my approach.

When I translated the book, Chinese culture on the world scene basically came down to Bruce Lee. Now, the world has turned, "Heroes" and "Croaching Dragon" are major international box office draws, and kung fu culture has infiltrated western culture to a significant degree - the Matrix series is the proof.

Story slow to start, but good when it gets going

This a kung fu adventure story full of fights, beautiful ladies, complicated romantic relationships, political intrigue and travel in China's wild west. The story takes a looong time to get going (about 300 pages out of 510.) When it finally gets going, it's quite good and hard to put down. The adventure gets more compelling, and at the same time it becomes something of a tragic love story.

This book shares some of the virtues and flaws of the other major Louis Cha/Jin Yong novel translated into English, "The Deer and the Cauldron." The virtue: both books are excellently and idiomatically translated by Graham Earnshaw, with a nice glossary to help you with all the character names. These two books are currently the ONLY novels by Louis Cha translated into English (except for one notoriously bad translation by someone else, and some comic book adaptations.)

The flaw: like "The Deer and the Cauldron" which took about 250 pages to get going, after which the next 1,250 pages (or whatever) were simply un-put-down-able, with this novel, the first 300 pages just introduce the characters and have repetitive fight scenes. It shows its origins as a serial in a newspaper. When the real story gets going, here it's only 210 pages to the end, alas, but it does leave you wanting more.

At first you think the novel is about a teenage girl who learns kung fu in secret and travels in disguise as a boy. Then you think it's about this or that member of the Red Flower Heroes, a secret society of patriots in Qing Dynasty China dedicated to overthrowing the Manchu government. They engage in numerous repetitive battles. Several couples are introduced and they gradually pair off, each romantic pairing clearly signalled.

Finally the story centers on Helmsmen Chen, the leader of the Red Flower Society, and his, um, complicated romantic relationships. While travelling in China's Muslim Wild West, he falls in love with Huo Qingtong, a Uighur (Turkic) princess of extraordinary brains, courage, and kung fu skills. But, due to a romantic misunderstanding, he thinks she's already taken. By coincidence he meets her sister, the Fragrant Princess Hasli, the most beautiful woman in the world. Through various misunderstandings, the virtuous Helmsmen Chen winds up with both sisters in love with him. I'm not giving anything away to say that this kind of thing cannot end well, and the story has a tragic aspect.

The latter part of the story can be quite exciting, with lost cities in the desert, hidden passages, that kind of thing. As you'd expect for a newspaper serial, there are implausible parts and logical discrepancies. If there's one thing about this novel that makes it inferior to "The Deer and the Cauldron", it's that Helmsman Chen is so virtuous, he's boring. I kept hoping he would show some lust or jealousy or something.

There is also a lot of political intrigue; the Manchu Emperor is secretly a Chinese by birth, and the Red Flower Heroes hatch a plan to exploit this fact to drive out the Manchu oppressors. Anyone who knows Chinese history knows how that will turn out. So, this story does not have a happy ending, but it is tied up nicely.

Graham Earnshaw deserves a lot of credit for translating this important Chinese author. Hey Graham, when you gonna translate "The Eagle-Shooting Heroes"?

another good book for my collection

this is what i expect from Louis Cha, an involving storyline and lots of kung fu stuff that i can't understand but still enjoy...
this book has both.
it's a great book, but i wish it were longer, cuz when i get into a book i don't want it to end. even "outlaws of the marsh"(2000+ pages) seems short when you're done reading it.

About the Author
The author graduated with honors from Sweet Briar College near Lynchburg, VA. After graduating in 1989, she was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the US Army, Corps of Engineers. She served in various posts throughout Germany during her tour of duty there, mainly as a platoon leader and a construction officer. Her experiences as a basic training company commander in Ft Leonard Wood, MO are the inspiration for this book. She currently resides near Ft Polk, LA with her husband and two children.

THE MORE INFO YOU GET, THE BETTER YOU FEEL

...and I definitely thought that this book was a good use of money and time. Most IET soldiers have trouble with the physical fitness test and this book helps you focus on what you need to do so that when you get there, passing the PT test is the one big thing that you won't need to worry about. You'll have so much else to worry about that you will be grateful that you can get this one thing off your plate. The plain fact is that BCT doesn't give the Army enough time to get most recruits in shape, so showing up with your push-ups, sit-ups, and 2 mile run at the right level is important. Use in conjunction with other resources. Your recruiter has an interest in seeing you graduate and he/she can also help you.

Good read

The training changes so rapidly I am not sure how relevant this kind of book is but it definitely points out some areas to focus on. If you know someone that has gone through basic they could probably tell you the same thing in an hour. Either way, if your going, start running and start your memorization.

Are you a nubie?

If you're a raw recruit, a nubie, wondering what awaits in today's modern boot camp, "Army Basic Training: Be Smart, Be Ready" by Raquel Thiebes, an honors college graduate and a former basic training company commander, offers a treasure chest of useful information. Thiebes roadmaps the pitfalls to avoid, and how to overcome bumps in the road. It's a how-to book, not pleasure reading, nor does it dwelve deeply into the boot camp experience. If you're looking for that type of read, look elsewhere.
