Another dated retread shows its age - but better than most

Virginal camp counselor Kathleen has a torrid affair with Erik, a videographer (two days after meeting him, she has sex with the virtual stranger in the forest). After an life-threatening accident, she mistakenly thinks that he is married and rather than confront him about the woman visiting his hospital room (his sister), she slinks away and has their love child.

Fast forward several years, where she has moved on with her life, and as she is about to marry Seth her boss who is disabled and has taken care of her and her son all these years (though he is unable to perform in the bedroom). Suddenly Erik has returned to the fold and she learns the truth about his so-called "wife." She now finds herself in a bind - should she marry the man who loves her more than life itself, and has dedicated himself to her and her child, or should she choose the passion that she experienced with her one and only lover?

Unfortunately, author Brown has taken the cowardly way out by enabling the wimpy heroine to not to make that all important decision after all. It defininitely shows its age, but it will tug at your heartstrings nonetheless.

Dated romance

I usually try to stay away from romances written in the 70s and 80s. However, the first Sandra Brown book that I read was in the 80s and I enjoyed it. With this one I had to stop reading it after the male lead turns ugly and insulting when the heroine turns him down after only knowing him for 2 days. If I had liked him before that I would not have then thought I was in love with him after that. The female lead felt too embarrassed to tell him that she was a virgin. Who cares what her reason was! Even in the 80s a women could say NO!!

I like a lead that I think I could fall in love with but who would fall for a bore like that. Even the first time he kissed seemed like he was forcing himself on her. Are his blond good looks supposed to compensate for his overbearing personality? Then her motherly friend tells her that he is being such a jerk because he cares for her. Is he entitled to sex for some reason?
Maybe the rest of the book can make me care if she is with him or not. I don't see how. Even if he finds out that she is a virgin and is sorry for his horrible behavior, it will not make me see him in a favorable light. Even if she was a street walker she has the right to tell him to keep it in his pants.

Sorry Sandra for my rant. You have a lot of books that I like. This just is not one of them.

The Silken Web is one of my favorites by Sandra Brown and I own almost every book she's ever written. Brown's work combines just the right amounts of decency and steam to form an overall piece that's not trashy, but that is ensured to make your temperature rise. Like to read on your lunchbreak? Rest assured, the covers of Brown's books do not consist of two lovers tearing each others clothes off! This book is about a love so spellbinding, your heart breaks a little along with those of the protagonists, and soars like a bird when love gets back on course. If you want a read to revive your faith in romance, this is your book. Enjoy!

About the Author
Vasant Lad brings a wealth of classroom and practical experience to the United States. He received the degree of Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery from the University of Pune, in Pune, India in 1968 and a Master of Ayurvedic Science from Tilak Ayurved Mahavidyalaya in Pune, India in 1980. For 3 years, Vasant Lad served as Medical Director of the Ayurveda Hospital in Pune. He also held the position of Professor of Clinical Medicine for seven years at the Pune University College of Ayurvedic Medicine, where he was an instructor for many years.

Vasant Lad's academic and practical training includes the study of allopathic medicine (Western Medicine) and surgery as well as traditional Ayurveda. In 1979, he began traveling throughout the United States sharing his knowledge of Ayurveda, and in 1981, he returned to New Mexico to teach Ayurveda. Vasant Lad founded and has served as the Director of The Ayurvedic Institute since 1984.

Vasant Lad is the author of 11 books on Ayurveda as well as hundreds of articles and other writings. With almost 500,000 copies of his books in print in the US, his work has been translated into more than 20 languages.

great insight to many medical problems that western perspective has only symptomatic treatments for. This is an eye opener for treating many chronic diseases (Rheuma, Sciatica, Chronic fatigue...). It is better understood if you have some basic knowledge of Ayurveda.

Let me preface this with the fact that I have been studying metaphysics and actively applying the principles for more than 20 years. I find this book to be more clear in thought than most of the Unity, Christian Science and other spiritual/new age books I have read and enjoyed. (countless books....100's literally). Mr. Goldsmith is a Master and Master teacher. If you are mature enough to encounter him, you are ready for the biggest and most positive transformation of your life. I read pgs. 1-83 of this book and my income doubled practically overnight. There is a quote on pg. 83 that I have distributed to clients all over the country. "Are we that which receives, or are we that center from which the infinity of God flows out? I might add that someone gave me a Goldsmith book about 7 years ago, and I couldn't get into it at all. After spiritually maturing, I find him refreshing, illuminating and a true God-send! I am to the point where if I had to eliminate all authors but one from my bookshelves, I'd keep Goldsmith. I am currently reading about three of his books simultaneously. They are deep and rich. Mysticism in Practice

I have been reading about mysticism and the experience of God for the past couple years. Goldsmith does an excellent job of presenting the reality of God within--that he is not a distant being, but one as close as our breath. His writing is fresh and filled with supporting Biblical references. In many ways, this book presents a practical way to be transformed by the experience of God and is valuable regardless of religious tradition.
However, conservative Christians will have difficulty with much of his theology, which is closely akin to Christian Science. I am a conservative, though open-minded Christian. My suggestion to conservatives is to use the concepts presented and rephrase some of the lines to fit your theology, but do not destroy the essence. For example, Goldsmith refers to "the Christ within." A conservative can easily modify this to just "Christ within." The harder part for most conservatives will be the idea that someone with a metaphysical perspective of God could experience God and teach them anything truthful about God.
I recommend this book together with books such as "Testament of Devotion," "Open Mind, Open Heart" and "Practicing His Presence" by Brother Lawrence. I would be willing to correspond with anyone about this book or others that I have reviewed.

nominated for a Pulitzer in 1984

I'm considering auditioning for a local rendition of this play, so was a bit concerned when I read a previous very negative review. I just want to point out that this play was nominated for a Pulitzer prize and was an Off-Broadway hit. Search the web for the reviews of it in the New York Times and the Washington Post. It sounds as if it's an extraordinary play and I'm just going to discount the words of the person who read it and disliked it in 2003.

Update after reading the play: this is one of the most touching portrayals of family dynamics I've ever read. I had tears in my eyes in the final scene. The characters are all likable and interesting, from the artist daughter come home to help her parents move out of their lifelong home, to the loving intellectual dad who's beginning to lose his grip, to the flamboyant yet grounded mom who wants daughter to understand that life with daddy ain't all roses these days. Loved this play from page 1 to the end. Touching without being cloyingly sweet.

If you have an advanced community theater looking for a small cast, single set show utilizing older actors, this is an excellent choice. Fanny and Gardner Church are an elderly couple about to move from their Beacon Hill home to Cape Cod. Gardner and Fanny are both from well to do high society families. They ask their daughter Mags to help them move, Gardner is a retired Pulitzer prize winning poet who is slipping onto senility and has a problem with incontinence. Fanny fights to keep them afloat and deals with Gardner's problem with humor which offends Mags who mistakes it for cruelty. A talented artist on the brink of fame herself, Mags has always believed her parents never saw the talents she has. She hopes to confront these feelings by painting their portrait. Similar in theme to ON GOLDEN POND this play is wonderfully warm as it explores family relationships. Poignant and funny, PAINTING CHURCHES provides three wonderful roles for three experienced actors

About the Author
Douglas A. Hall is the President of the Emmanuel Gospel Center in Boston (www.egc.org), where he has served with his wife, Judy Hall, since 1964. He is also an adjunct professor of urban ministry with Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary.

If you have read Senge's "The Fifth Discipline" you will have a good understanding of what this book is all about

I spent 11 years serving in Guatemala and knew that there was something missing in the approach used by well-intentioned foreigners (mostly people from the US) to help address the needs of this underdeveloped country. (and actually a resource rich one) Simplistic (use a "fix the toaster" approach) means to address the needs in that country has NOT led to development and actually a recent report indicates the level of poverty has actually increased. All of these folks need to read "The Cat and the Toaster." Though the language Doug uses may be foreign to some ears the wisdom about how to think in terms of human systems when challenged with a difficult problem is not difficult to grasp. Anyone who is tired of battling persistent problems related to development and who feel they are getting no where will have many "aha" moments when reading this book.

If you have read Senge's "The Fifth Discipline" you will have a good understanding of what this book is all about. However while excellent, Senge's work is written from a secular/humanist worldview while the Cat and the Toaster is thoroughly Christian in its foundation.

Don't expect a cookie-cutter formula in this work. There is no formula for successfully overcoming the complexities that are the results of humans living together in systems, be they churches, mosques, small town or large cities. (this work is written from the perspective of work done in Boston) But do expect your eyes to be opened to a fascinating and promising way of thinking deeply (not a common theme these days) and carefully about the plans you make for overcoming the increasing complexities of human life.
