A great book from a great professor.

After taking some classes from Dr. Steve Feller, I got interested in holograms. Dr. Feller does offer a class about Holography, but I could not take it due to class scheduling conflict. That being said after reading the book I was very surprised to see how simple it is to make a rudimentary hologram using standard camera film. At the end of this semester, I am going to try my hand at making one. I would encourage anyone who had an interested in learning how these are made to read this book.

The power of a new approach to results-driven, high-impact strategic thinking

Paul Butler, John Manfredi, and Peter Klein introduce and thoroughly explain a new approach to thinking simply, yet strategically: "That's TTW, Think to Win." I hasten to add that how "winning" is defined should be determined by the individuals and organizations that seek to achieve it. The key term is "strategic." I agree with Butler, Manfredi, and Klein that in the healthiest organizations, the most successful organizations, there is effective strategic thinking at all levels and in all areas of the given enterprise.

As they point out, "Many companies have generated remarkable successes by creating traditions of strategic thinking. By instilling this capability throughout the organizations, companies such as Keurig, Jamba Juice, Procter & Gamble, Gillette, and New Balance have enjoyed years of dynamic growth. Butler, Manfredi, and Klein identify five principles that can serve as a "compass" to guide and inform strategic thinking:

o Challenge assumptions: Take no one and nothing for granted.
o Scope the issue: Determine its nature and extent.
o Rely on facts and data: Separate empirical evidence from "common knowledge."
o Focus on the vital few: Focus on the 10% that has the greatest impact on the 90%.
o Connect the dots: Make certain that they are the right dots and connected in the right pattern.

I commend the co-authors on their brilliant use of various reader-friendly devices, notably dozens of "Try This" application exercises strategically located throughout their lively and eloquent narrative. For business leaders who wish to introduce or strengthen strategic thinking throughout their organization, Paul Butler, John Manfredi, and Peter Klein provide an abundance of information, insights, and counsel. Some of the most valuable material is in two appendices: an "Organizational Alignment Survey and then a "Think to Win Situation Assessment Diagnostic: Situation Assessment Tool for Consumer/Customer Marketing." Be sure to read and then re-read the nine chapters and Epilogue first.

Although the mini-case studies focus on larger organizations such as Gillette, LEGO, and Duracell, I believe that almost all of the material (with only minor modification) can also be of substantial value to almost any organization, whatever its size and nature may be. That said, the value of the Think to Win - or any other approach, for that matter -- will depend entirely on the willingness and ability of those involved to master core concepts and requisite tools, then apply then effectively to the given need, challenge, or opportunity. I am convinced that the fastest way, the easiest way, the least expensive way, to achieve a strategic objective is to pursue it the right way.

Best Business Strategy Design Book

Think to Win (TTW) is the best strategy book for business leaders I have read in years! I couldn’t put it down until I read it cover-to-cover. In their book, the authors Butler, Manfredi, and Klein guide business management through the process of thinking through strategy rather than just responding to perceived threats or potential opportunities. This keeps C-level managers and their reports from business or project failure caused by rushed ideas rather than thinking things through. What the book teaches works for both non-profit and profit organizations. The authors start the book with tested guiding principles that sound a lot like quality improvement processes as well as management and organizational teachings at the MBA level, yet better illustrated than what the scholars teach. Their guidelines include: challenge assumptions, scope the issue, rely on facts and data, focus on the vital few, and finally connect the dots to see what will work and prevent a scattered approach for change. The process starts with 4 steps and tools to look at the present situation. During the steps of part 1, you will find tools like data analysis, SWOT, and SCA explained. Then the process moves to the four steps for looking to and planning the future. In part 2, you will continue to use SWOT plus develop: vision, core strategies, goals, plans, and communications. I thought so much of the guidelines and processes in this book that I included an outline of both on my business productivity blog!

This is one of the best business books I have ever read

This is one of the best business books I have ever read! I have been in the business world for over 35 years and through many complicated “canned” programs that last a few years in the company until replaced by the next fad. TTW is a straight forward, common sense approach to understanding your business and taking steps to formulating a winning future. It has many real life business references where the process has been successful and is very enlightening and entertaining. I have three children who are all gainfully employed with Fortune 500 companies and I am having them all read this book as a great primer for their ongoing business education.

Kuper has adapted short works by Kafka into comics before, but here he tackles the most famous one of all: the jet-black comedy that ensues after the luckless Gregor Samsa turns into a gigantic bug. The story loses a bit in translation (and the typeset text looks awkward in the context of Kuper's distinctly handmade drawings). A lot of the humor in the original comes from the way Kafka plays the story's absurdities absolutely deadpan, and the visuals oversell the joke, especially since Kuper draws all the human characters as broad caricatures. Even so, he works up a suitably creepy frisson, mostly thanks to his drawing style. Executed on scratchboard, it's a jittery, woodcut-inspired mass of sharp angles that owes a debt to both Frans Masereel (a Belgian woodcut artist who worked around Kafka's time) and MAD magazine's Will Elder. The knotty walls and floors of the Samsas' house look like they're about to dissolve into dust. In the book's best moments, Kuper lets his unerring design sense and command of visual shorthand carry the story. The jagged forms on the huge insect's belly are mirrored by folds in business clothes; thinking about the debt his parents owe his employer, Gregor imagines his insectoid body turning into money slipping through an hourglass. Every thing and person in this Metamorphosis seems silhouetted and carved, an effect that meshes neatly with Kafka's sense of nightmarish unreality.

Adult/High School-Gregor Samsa wakes up and discovers he has been changed into a giant cockroach. Thus begins "The Metamorphosis," and Kuper translates this story masterfully with his scratchboard illustrations. The text is more spare, but the visuals are so strongly rendered that little of the original is changed or omitted. Though the story remains set in Kafka's time, Kuper has added some present-day touches, such as fast-food restaurants, that do not detract from the tale. He has used the medium creatively, employing unusual perspectives and panel shapes, and text that even crawls on the walls and ceilings, as Gregor does. The roach has an insect body but human facial expressions. Once he is pelted with the apple, readers can watch his rapid decline, as his body becomes more wizened and his face more gaunt. This is a faithful rendition rather than an illustrated abridgment.

Gregor's plight, his growing alienation from his horrified family, and his gradual acceptance of the metamorphosis have come to be viewed as the quintessential symbolic depiction of modern existence. Against all expectations, Kuper's cartoonish style doesn't throw off the story's balance by accentuating Kafka's black humor. Rather, Kuper's visual depiction of Gregor's agony and the family's cruelty toward him points up what is disturbing in the tale, and the portrayal of Gregor's physical deterioration is truly harrowing. Moreover, Kuper's signature scratchboard technique, which resembles traditional woodcut style, suits the story's period, while his lively, expressive drawing lends contemporary vitality. Remaining faithful to its literary origin, Kuper thoroughly inhabits the tale, making his realization a genuine work of posthumous collaboration. The result is a Classics Illustrated with class. Wow. What a fine piece of world literature. Story is grim, gripping, tautly written with tension mounting page after page. Crucial that reader understand Kafka's personal history/background, that particular era in Europe, as well as the intellectual influences that shaped Kafka as a young lawyer/writer. Influences include German realism, mysticism, Talmudic structure and logic, and French existentialism. Brilliantly imagined and I am so glad to have read it.

Strange and difficult

This has got to be one of the strangest books I've ever read. Is it a bad dream or is it the angst we all feel over our misdeeds. There were times I wanted to stop reading because it didn't seem to make sense. Now I'm quite sure it is not supposed to make sense. I'm not sure I would recommend this book to anyone a although the writing has a certain sort of genius to it. The book certainly evokes a number of feelings we don't normally like feeling.

If you love Hesse, you'll love this

I read it because it's a classic and I try to read a couple of year. The free Kindle version is not well-edited, which is a bit distracting (but what do you expect for free?). Having read Hesse in my younger days, I should have known what I was getting in early 20th century central European fiction. If you love Hesse, you'll love this. Unfortunately, I don't.

Grade 2-4-In this little jewel of a beginning chapter book, Gregory, the Chalk Box Kid (Random, 1987), returns with his friends Ivy and Richard. Here, Gregory paints pictures of Uncle Pancho's childhood in Mexico on the man's house. When the house is slated for demolition because of a new freeway, a plan is hatched to save it; when that fails, the house is moved out of the path of destruction to a new site. Uncle Pancho's hopes of being reunited with his son come to nothing, but a neighbor, Mr. Hiller, presents himself as a volunteer adopted son. Thus, disappointments are turned into victories. Even self-absorbed Uncle Max comes partly alive and shows a little interest in Gregory's artwork. Beier's pencil drawings are effective and plentiful but, given the topic, it's a shame they aren't in color. The full-color picture on the cover clearly shows the beatific expression of a child engaged in the flow of creation.

I really enjoyed this story and it made me want to paint when I finished it.

This story is about a kid named Gregory. He loves to paint and draw with his friend, Ivy.

One day, they went to see their friend, Uncle Pancho. They found out Uncle Pancho's house was going to be destroyed because people were going to put a new freeway through his property.

Gregory and Ivy were going to paint pictures on Uncle Pancho's home to save it. You will have to read this story to find out what happens next!

This story was wonderful and it made me want to do art more after I read The Paint Brush Kid.

This story is about a boy named Gregory and his friend,Ivy. They were looking for Ivy's brother, Richard. They finally found him at a great story teller's home. His name was Uncle Pancho.

For Gregory's summer vacation, he wanted to paint Uncle Pancho's house. The kids painted his house with colorful pictures from all the stories Uncle Pancho told the kids.

This was a fun story!

Excellant Review material

Couldn't be more please with the pace and structure of this book. This volume is very structured and concisely ties together the material into a well researched discussion. Not an in-depth start-from-scratch read. Use this if you need a thorough wrap-up of the material. Definitely worth a look.

Don't let this Fool you - Very. very high level review book only

I like the light, high level review in this book. If only the CISSP let you off this easy.

I have not taken the test yet, but all the practice tests go way, way into details that this book never gets near. I used CISSP Exam Cram Practice Test book which is very good and the ISC2 paid tests so far.

I read the whole Shon Harris and Eric Conrad books and even those miss 10% of the stuff that I see on practice tests.

Do not rely on this book as thorough prep but only as a high level review to be used after you've slogged through several months of intense studying with the authors I mentioned above.

Rapid Review means Rapid Review

People don't realize that this book is just meant to be a review of key concepts. It's not a sole study source but I think it makes a great supplement when used with a book like the CISSP: Certified Information Systems Security Professional Study Guide from Sybex, that goes in depth on the related concepts. This book is for the final push prior taking the certification exam. So, don't buy this book as the only study source for CISSP, this is a complement or a suplement on your study diet. Good luck!
