Three early novels from the glory years of Spenser for Hire

This collection brings together the fifth, sixth, and seventh Spenser for Hire novels by Robert B. Parker, representing the early glory days when our hero was trying to figure out how to make things work with Susan Silverman and Hawk was always around to help do the good deeds. The key thing is that Parker refuses to fit into a restrictive formula at this point and that his books are perfectly suited for those who spend time reading as a way of enduring the commuter lifestyle.
"The Judas Goat" (178) offers some twists on our hero as he travels to Europe and needs the assistance of Hawk to do his good deeds as we learn that apparently Spenser cannot do everything by himself. Spenser is hired by a millionaire industrialist who was crippled in the terrorist bomb blast in a London restaurant that killed his wife and daughter. Hugh Dixon will pay Spenser $2,500 for each of the nine members of the gang, dead or alive. Spenser's plan is to go to London and find himself a "Judas goat," someone in the gang he can turn to get at the others. Of course, since this is a Spenser novel the case proves to be a lot more complicate. This is one of the fastest paced novels in the series and features a most efficient Spenser, which seems a strange comment given all the waiting he does in this novel. On the personal front his relationship with Susan is progressing nicely (apply appropriate adage involving distance). The final twist that takes our hero to Montreal is a bit over the top, but if you remember events from the summer of 1972 it is not so far-fetched.
In "Looking for Rachel Wallace" our hero is hired to protect the title character, a radical lesbian feminist who has been receiving death threats because of her latest book "Tyranny," which is about people in high places who discriminate against gay women. To no one's surprise Rachel Wallace does not take well to Spenser's sense of humor, the way he dresses, his chosen avocation--okay, she does not like ANYTHING about him. But she needs protection and he can carry on an intelligent argument, so there is some level of respect. Everybody is worried or at least wondering what Spenser thinks about lesbians and radical feminists, and there are several feisty conversations along such lines between the pair, but the actual subject under examination in this book turns out to be Spenser himself, although most of the insights come from Susan Silverman instead of the Rachel Wallace. There is a point where Spenser explains if anything happens to him, Hawk should take up the case. Susan points out she does not know how to contact him and Spenser assures her that if anything happens Hawk will show up and ask if she needs anything. Susan talks about the implicit code that binds Spenser, Hawk, Quirk, Healy, etc., and I suddenly realize that Spenser has been NETWORKING! The first half of "Looking for Rachel Wallace" deals Spenser trying to do his job until he offends the writer's political sensibilities and is dismissed. As you can tell from the title, the second half of the novel brings changes the nature of the case and even though he is no longer employed to care, of course he takes responsibility for everything that has happened. The most unique part of this novel is that Spenser makes some serious mistakes (I even spotted a key clue way before he did), so he is not as on top of his game as usual. You especially know this is true when Spenser gets beaten up in a fight and apologizes several times for what he says. More than any other novel to this point in the series, "Looking for Rachel Wallace" gets to the heart of the character, understandably knocking him off stride to reveal the true nature of the man.
With "Early Autum" we again find a new twist in a new Spenser adventure. This time our hero is hired by Patti Giacomin to find her son Paul, kidnapped by his father. Spenser finds Paul almost immediately and it quickly becomes clear that neither parent really cares about the boy, who is just a pawn in the wake of an ugly divorce. Paul needs someone to teach him, well, just about everything (except how to shrug; the kid does that really well in response to literally every question asked by Spenser throughout the entire book). "Early Autumn," a metaphor for a 15-year old kid who has to grow up really fast, finds Spenser talking more than any of the previous books, although at the end his detective skills will again come into play. A large chunk of the book is Spenser and Paul talking about a whole bunch of different topics. In doing so, Spenser explains his view of the world, a task usually left to Susan Silverman. There is also an unforgettable twist as Hawk lends a hand at a key moment.
Can you beginning with "A New Collection of Three Complete Novels" and pick up the Spenser for Hire series from there? Certainly. But there is something to be said for going back and doing this series from the beginning. Early on the point is more the cases, but as the series progresses it becomes more about the relationships. Not just the major ones with Susan, Hawk, and Paul, but also those with the growing supporting cast, which includes Rachel Wallace.

Three early masterpieces from the master of detective stories.

I read all three of these novels years ago when I first discovered the great novelist Robert B. Parker and his famous detective Spenser--the Man With No First Name. In re-reading them from my viewpoint as a mystery writer myself, Parker is the master of the craft. These three are a bit shorter than some of his later works, but they are every bit as satisfying. Good plots, good action, well-developed characters.

fantastic mysteries!

I love Robert B. Parker mysteries - especially his Spenser series. The plots are amazing, the diaglogue intriguing and fun to read. The banter between Spenser and Hawk is so funny. I highly recomment any and all of Parker's Spenser mysteries. Once I read one, I had to get all 40 and read them in order. I am hooked and only wish he'd written a lot more!

About the Editor:

Victor R. Preedy, PhD, DSc, FSB, FRSH, FRIPH, FRSPH, FRCPath, FRSC is a senior member of King's College London. He is also director of the Genomics Centre and a member of the Faculty of Life Sciences and Medicine.

Professor Preedy has longstanding academic interests in substance misuse, especially in relation to health and well being. He was a member of the editorial board of Drug and Alcohol Dependence and was a founding member of the editorial board of Addiction Biology. In his career, Professor Preedy was reader at the Addictive Behaviour Centre at the University of Roehampton, and also reader at the School of Pharmacy (now part of University College London). Professor Preedy is editor of the multivolume seminal works Comprehensive Handbook of Alcohol Related Pathology and The Neuropathology of Drug Addictions and Substance Misuse (both published by Academic Press-Elsevier).

Victor R. Preedy BSc, PhD, DSc, FRSB, FRSPH, FRCPath, FRSC is a senior member of King's College London. He is also Director of the Genomics Centre and a member of the Faculty of Life Sciences and Medicine.

Professor Preedy has longstanding academic interests in substance misuse especially in relation to health and well being. He is a member of the Editorial Board of Drug and Alcohol Dependence and a founding member of the Editorial Board of Addiction Biology. In his career Professor Preedy was Reader at the Addictive Behaviour Centre at The University of Roehampton, and also Reader at the School of Pharmacy (now part of University College London; UCL). Professor Preedy is Editor of the influential works The Handbook Of Alcohol Related Pathology, The Neuropathology of Drug Addictions and Substance Misuse and The Handbook of Cannabis and Related Pathologies (all published by Academic Press-Elsevier).

Professor Preedy graduated in 1974 with an Honours Degree in Biology and Physiology with Pharmacology. He gained his University of London PhD in 1981. In 1992, he received his Membership of the Royal College of Pathologists and in 1993 he gained his second doctoral degree (DSc). Professor Preedy was elected as a Fellow of the Institute of Biology in 1995 and also as a Fellow to the Royal College of Pathologists in 2000. He was then elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society for the Promotion of Health (2004) and The Royal Institute of Public Health and Hygiene (2004). In 2009, Professor Preedy became a Fellow of the Royal Society for Public Health and in 2012 a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry.

To his credit, Professor Preedy has published over 600 articles, which includes peer-reviewed manuscripts based on original research, abstracts and symposium presentations, reviews and numerous books and volumes.

The definitive tome on the Bauhaus and a work of art in itself

The Bauhaus was the defining birthplace of modernism, and one that continues to influence artistic and aesthetic direction today.

This volume is comprehensive, and is in itselt, as an object that reflects Bauhaus sensibility - a reflection of the movement.

I have been seeking a copy off an on for over 30 years but they are hard to come by - I have only seen one or two (hardcover) ones for sale in that time. The copy I have purchased is second hand but in fine condition - including the beautifully articulated slipcase.

One of the great beneifts of the internet, and in particular, when it comes to books, is Amazon's (and a few other websites) functionality in bringing together buyers and sellers for out of print, and relatively rare books, still at affordable prices.

I purchased my copy from the US and had it delivered to Australia, for a third of the cover price the book was, 30 years ago.

Even ignoring inflacon, this is surely a bargain.

Please note that my comments refer to the hardcover version only, The later produced softcover, is just a book, in comparison.

A timeless classic it enjoys pride of place in my personal library.

A great deal of information, focused on individuals and their contributions to the Bauhaus. ALL pages are in black and white, which is always a great disappointment when reading about art, design or architecture. Considering this production shortcoming, the book is overpriced. Its written content, very useful and thorough.

About the Author

Murray Weidenbaum is Edward Mallinckrodt Distinguished University Professor of Economics at Washington University in St. Louis and honorary chairman of the Weidenbaum Center on the Economy, Government and Public Policy. He was the first chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers to Ronald Reagan and also served as a member of Reagan’s Economic Policy Advisory Board. He is the author of numerous books, including Business and Government in the Global Marketplace, One-Armed Economist, and The Bamboo Network.

Dated Classic

"The Modern Corporation and Private Property" was hailed as an instant classic when it appeared in 1932. To my knowledge, it was the first book to spell out how modern corporate capitalism is characterized by pervasive oligopoly and the separation of management from ownership. These points are still valid today, and remind us that modern capitalism has little in common with the social system analyzed by Adam Smith and other Classical economists. However, most of "The Modern Corporation and Private Property" is taken up with an out-of-date, pre-SEC review of corporate finance law as it existed in 1930. As a result, the book will be of little interest to most modern readers, even though it is a "must" purchase for any serious library of books on economics or corporate governance.

Worthy of study today, as well as when it was written!

I was lucky to have Professor Berle as a teacher at the Columbia Law School. I read the book then (in the early 1960s) and re-read it recently. It is timely reminder that the corporation--that great engine of our prosperity--has undergone significant (and not for the better) changes--not only from when the book was written, but also in the forty-four years since I read it last.

Patterned after David Daniel’s Orchestra Music, Meyer catalogs chamber orchestra and ensemble pieces. The main part of the catalog is arranged alphabetically by composer, and each entry contains information needed to know what instruments and their number are required to play it—flutes, oboes, clarinets, horns, strings, and more—and the duration of each piece. The appendixes prove even more valuable. Arrangement here is first by solo voices, then solo instruments, string orchestras, ensembles by string count, followed by compositions that use no percussion, no harps or pianos, and so on. Dirk Meyer is Music Director of the Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra. In September 2012, he was named First Prize winner of The American Prize in Orchestral Conducting. He is actively involved in the commissioning of new works, including a commission from Miguel del Aguila, and has led many world and American premieres, including the American premiere of Arvo P�rt's These Words....

An Excellent Resource!

As a conductor at a university, it is easy to exhaust resources when trying to construct musical programs that are interesting for players and audiences. Dr. Dirk Meyer has opened a new window to programming possibilities that I am indeed grateful to have. Chamber Orchestra and Ensemble Repertoire: A Catalog of Modern Music is a text that is extremely well-organized and easy to use. The material is presented in a very logical way with comprehensive information that any musician would need. This an excellent resource!
