Great book for anyone in need of healing!

How great to have this comprehensive book to refer to when we need some healing. Dr. Karen has presented a variety of alternative methods which can help us feel better-physically, emotionally and spiritually. What a relief it is to learn that there are lots of drug-free tools and therapies available; moreover, her "take baby steps" approach to healing is comforting. No need to "jump into healing head-first" if it means never even starting.

Letters everyone must read

There are two editions of "Letters My Mother Never Read", the green version is the abridged copy. Reading this version deprives the reader of Jerri's poetry, family photos, and legal documents that support this incredible story. That said, the green copy will not lessen the emotional turmoil the reader will experience as Jerri recounts her life story. From the step-grandmother who fed her cookies and milk one month and relegated her to life in the coal cellar and the yard only a few months later, to the foster mothers who would not allow her in the house, to coping as a college student with no place to go when the dorms closed for breaks, Jerri explains how even the most basic concepts of how to use a telephone could be alien to someone who has who has been raised without role models and relegated to non-human status. This book is a must for foster children who may have thought that no one could ever understand, a must for educators who may realize that a student needs help, a must for social workers to read of people who have slipped through the cracks, and a must for children and parents to realize they have what others only dream of. Great book about the human spirit

This book is an excellent read. Although it's very sad to see the plight of an unwanted child, it's also encouraging to see the strength of the main character.

Good book for exam - bad for knowledge

Good book for exam preparation, though almost useless for getting knowledge. 90% is just useless finance mambo jumbo. If all you want is to pass an exam - go for it. If you want real knowledge go for other resources and books - such as FRM, CFA etc.

Yes, and book lacks any practice questions, so you'd have to buy them separately.

Succinct Analysis and Emulation

Nancy Dean's Voice Lessons provide 100 quotes from a variety of writers, genres, and styles followed by poignant analysis questions and corresponding modeling exercises.
The introduction thoroughly defines each facet of Voice to be explored. The body is divided into 20 pages of exercises per category: Diction, Details, Imagery, Syntax, and Tone (here linked with Attitude). Each page has ample space for answers on photocopies or on an overhead transparency (both permissable and encouraged). Dean outlines practical-- and flexible--methods for utilizing the activities straight from the book with no additional preparation stress. (I can testify that the suggestions do work!)
My general level to AP students' interest was piqued by samples from modern writers such as Tom Wolfe, Erma Bombeck, Chinua Cchebe and Toni Morrison along with cannonized authors like Shakespeare, Orwell, Steinbeck, Milton, Yeats, and even G.B. Shaw. The book is a wonderful resource for state and national competency test preparation or for increasing reading comprehension and literary appreciation. Compliments to Ms.Dean.

What a great book!

Voice Lessons is a very useful tool for aspiring writers at the high school level and beyond. Dean focuses on five elements of voice: diction, detail, imagry, syntax, and tone. In 100 self-contained exercises, the student is presented with a literary excerpt (the range and diversity of the quotations is wonderful!), and then given questions for discussion and application. Students learn firsthand from the greatest writers in the English language, and really begin to think about their writing. This book is a joy to work with!

Voice Lessons is a collection of writing exercises that will stretch the brightest students and focus the rest. Each exercise begins with an example from a broad range of English literature and then challenges the reader to examine how it manages one of the following components: Diction, Detail, Imagery, Syntax and Tone.
In addition to being a quite useful collection of exercises, there are some important, benefits to the manner of presentation. The diversity of the selections (as well as their brevity) establishes, as a given, that the issues explored in these exercises have a wide application. Also, there are no lauditory introductions to or explanations of the excerpted authors: instead, each selection is placed on our workbench and we are encouraged to paw the offering and then to fashion our own. I particularly like this respectful, workaday approach to the student and the task of learning.
The exercises work independently so you should find it easy to mix and match them to conform to your existing course-plan. If you have the luxury of an independent plan for each student the book is a whole kit of ready starting points.

Excellent book for Kyoto

we visited Kyoto for 10 days and we found this book pretty helpful. We ended up keeping it with us the whole time. I really liked the walking tours- especially through Gion area- very well done!! And the pull out map was our main navigation source. Worth the price of the book by itself. I've been using Lonely Planet books since the 80's and this book does not disappoint. Also- it's small and light. Going to Kyoto? get this book.
It also included stuff about Nara and a few other places around Kyoto- day trips- so that was nice.

A nice clear guide to the area

A nice clear guide to the area. We couldn't find one of the recommended restaurants (can't recall the name offhand but it was at the northeast corner of the Imperial Palace gardens), but otherwise found it to be very helpful for our short stay in Kyoto.
