We finally get answers!
By Terisa
The fourth book in the Grayton Series is the long awaited book that we finally find out what happed to Marissa, the sister that disappeared shortly after tuning seventeen. The five siblings had all been adopted by the Grayton’s, each coming from horrible circumstances. Roman has been looking for her even more than his other adopted siblings because they shared a secret, Roman and Marissa had fallen in love. While they had shared more than the other siblings, even Roman didn’t know as much as he thought he did about Marissa. That being that while they all came from horrible pasts, Marissa’s past had found her which meant that her future was not as cut and dry as the others. She felt that she had no choice but to run just as she had no choice but to hide. Now that Roman had found her everything was going to come out into the open, why she ran, why she was still running as well as what she was hiding. Will their love be able to stand the test of time when all of her secrets were out in the open?

Like the other books in the series, I highly enjoyed this one. A close nit family who have stood by each other and continue to do so regardless of where they all started out. I loved the beginning just as much as I loved the ending but I will say that I wish there was an epilogue, something with all of the family together with their Dad and Aunt showing how each of their lives turned out a few years later or so but I’m not complaining at all. I highly recommend this series and while technically they can be read as stand-a-lone, it’s best to read them in order. Especially books three and four.

Roman and Missy have been in love since they were kids
By Julia
Roman and Missy have been in love since they were kids. Missy disappeared when she was 18 and Roman never quit looking for her. When he finally finds her, he is shocked to find that he has a son. Missy has a lot of secrets and he needs to find out why she left and why she didn't tell him he had a son.

You're Pillar!!!
By ZETTER
Marissa Grayton the other adoptive daughter of the Graytons, ran away when she was 17 years old. The rest of her siblings have been looking for her for years especially Roman Grayton but they didn't find her until now.

Roman Grayton a finally found the only woman who he had ever loved, Marissa. Now that he found her, he would do anything to make sure that she and their son, Reagan are safe.

Yes Missy and Roman had a son, it sure didn't sit well with the latter when he found out that she kept such a life changing secret from him. But all his anger subsided when he realized that she was protecting Reagan from the cult she belonged to when she was small.

IN TOO DEEP was beautiful, love how despite them both being adopted by the Graytons....Roman and Marissa never felt that sister and brother bond, they always had a deeper and more passionate connection.

The way Missy and Roman fought for their family was well done, the former faced her past.... and slayed the dragon in order to keep her loved ones safe.

Love the bond between Marcus, Casey, Cole, Marissa and Roman.....his book was filled with love, loyalty and understanding but most of all of it was about a family sticking together no matter what.

Jill Sanders did a magnificent job, looking forward to what she's got in store for us next with this incredible series.

Classic collection of spooky tales
By octobercountry
This evening I finished reading a short story collection from 1952 titled "A Pad in the Straw," by Christopher Woodforde. I first became aware of this book after reading one of the stories from it in another collection Dread and Delight: A Century of Children's Ghost Stories; the tale made such an impression on me that I thought I'd search out more by the author.

I was not previously familiar with the slang term "A Pad in the Straw," which actually means "something amiss" (though it could also handily serve as a reference to the demonic little figurines made from straw that feature in one of the stories). As for what the book is about, well, let's just look at the back cover:

=========================================
"If you have ever stood in a lonely churchyard at dust, or thought the dark heart of a wood an eerie place at such a time, you will sense the magnetism of these subtly told stories, which have in them the prickle of terror.

"Most readers of ghost stories feel they have had their money's worth if the horrors are well done: Dr Woodforde not only creates the necessary atmosphere in which ghosts walk, but also tellingly mingles the past with the present. His haunted England can lie just off the noisy bypass or behind an aerodrome, where one might discover a church, or the library of an old manor, brooding on its sinister secret. The reader's interest never flags for these are tales of the supernatural told by a man of sensitive and subtle mind who knew exactly where suspense resides."
=========================================

I really enjoyed the twenty selections, which mostly have a subtle, classic ghost story/horror feel to them. Several of the tales are a bit vague, telling the reader WHAT happened while leaving the exact explanations/details as to WHY these things occurred to the imagination. Now, I find it rather irritating when an entire novel is written this way, leaving too much for the reader to puzzle out---but for these short stories, the style totally works. In fact, I would say the most effective, memorable, and creepy selections here are those which are just a bit misty around the edges, leaving some things unsaid. I'll definitely recommend this book for those who enjoy a good spooky (but not graphic) tale.

I became curious about the author, and found some information written about him by by Richard Dalby (from "Ghosts & Scholars 14: Writers in the James Tradition Number 11"):

==========================================
"The Very Reverend Dr Christopher Woodforde has always been regarded as one of the more controversial and unusual members of the 'James Gang'. His 'curious' and fantastic stories were originally narrated to schoolboys under his charge, and although they were revised and written for a much wider public, many readers still tend to pigeon-hole them as juvenile tales.

"His collection of twenty stories, A Pad in the Straw, was published in 1952 by J.M. Dent & Sons as a follow-up to their William Fryer Harvey titles Midnight Tales and The Arm of Mrs Egan, and similarly marketed as eerie "strange tales for the connoisseur". A Pad in the Straw was brought to Dent's attention and introduced by the eminent literary critic Lord David Cecil, who championed many other neglected writers (notably Barbara Pym) and - like Woodforde - was a Fellow of New College, Oxford.

"Although Woodforde has been compared to Harvey (especially when A Pad in the Straw and The Beast with Five Fingers were reissued by Dent as 'Aldine Paperbacks' in the early 1960s), he is certainly closer to MRJ with a distinctive antiquarian flavour, frequent settings in East Anglia, a vivid sense of the atmosphere of country churches and of the wealth of tradition symbolised by their medieval antiquities and everyday adjuncts: 'hassock and cassock, paraffin and pew'."
==========================================

A PAD IN THE STRAW has to my knowledge only been printed twice, once in hardcover and once in paperback. It's rather difficult to find today (a quick internet search yielded fewer than ten copies for sale on-line, with prices to match the rarity). So, this is one of those titles that it's worth keeping an eye out for.

I have to say, the paperback artwork combines just about every spooky clich there is: glowing eyes, cemetery at night, open coffin with skeleton, see-through wraith in white, a bat, gothic ruins, leafless branches against a night sky, full moon partially hidden behind scudding clouds. Wow, what else can you fit in there?! And---it's absolutely marvellous---I love it! They just don't design book covers in this style any more; I think it's great. The hardcover dustjacket design is fine, but the paperback is more fun.

AWESOME BOOKS!!!!
By Merea
HIGHLY RECOMMEND!! I read the Daughters of Darkness bundle with the 4 sisters wrote by 4 different authors & decided 2 start reading the rest in these series....glad I did. Blair was great in her small adventure. What a good idea behind giving 4 different authors the oppurtunity to write their story behind each sister. I really liked that idea. So I'm on to the next sister's story. Cant wait. GREAT READ!!!!

pleasantly surprised
By coraya
This was pretty good I'm kinda out of books to read and I've never read any of the free books on Amazon so I am pleasantly surprise. My only critique would be I wish there would have been a little more character development so I could really feel for the characters. The book was over far to soon!

I hate cliff hangers,
By Mandy sundin
I hate it that you didn't write a following book and end Blairs story. I hate cliff hanger, don't just end the book that's way. End her story, does she meet her other sisters, does Victoria know who the other sisters are? Like I have more quotations I would like to see how it ends for Blair. And if you do decide please, don't kill her or Danny!!

The Selected Poems of Donald Hall, by Donald Hall

Former poet laureateDonald Hall selects the essential work from a moving and brilliant life in poetry.

The ability to write poemshas“abandoned” DonaldHall, now in his eighties, one of the most significant — and beloved — poets of his generation. Instead of creating new poems, he has looked back over his astonishingly rich body of work and hand-picked poems for this final, concise volume that will delight, and endure. The Selected Poems of Donald Hall is the definitive collection, showcasing poems rich with humor and eros and “a kind of simplicity that succeeds in engaging the reader in the first few lines” (Billy Collins).“However wrenching [Hall’s poems] may be from line to line, they tell a story that is essentially reassuring: art and love are compatible, genius is companionable, and people stand by one another in the end” (New York Times Book Review).

From the Inside Flap
“When I was twelve I wrote my first poem, and by fourteen I decided that’s what I’d do my whole life.I don’t regret it.” — from the afterword by Donald Hall

Donald Hall is an American master, one of the nation’s most beloved and accomplished poets. Now in his eighties, having taken stock of the body of his work—rigorous, gorgeous verse that is the result of seventy years of “ambition and pleasure”—he strips it down.

The Selected Poems of Donald Hall reflects the poet’s handpicked, concise selection, showcasing work rich with humor and eros and “a kind of simplicity that succeeds in engaging the reader in the first few lines” (Billy Collins).

From the enduring “My Son My Executioner” to “Names of Horses” to “Without,” Donald Hall’s best poems deliver “a banquet in the mouth” (Charles Simic) and an “aching elegance” (Baltimore Sun). For the first-time reader or an old friend, these are, above all others, the poems to read, reread, and remember.

Pale gold of the walls, gold
of the centers of daisies, yellow roses
pressing from a clear bowl. All day
we lay on the bed, my hand
stroking the deep
gold of your thighs and your back.
We slept and woke
entering the golden room together,
lay down in it breathing
quickly, then
slowly again,
caressing and dozing, your hand sleepily
touching my hair now.

We made in those days
tiny identical rooms inside our bodies
which the men who uncover our graves
will find in a thousand years,
shining and whole.

You've brought this a long way, Perkins.
By Aceto
Makes sense Hall would start his selection of old poems with "My Son the Executioner", since he is living it out some sixty years later. Seems he still agrees with what he wrote about an instrument of immortality. Makes sense that many of his selections are on aging and on some deaths.

No preface or introduction, he pitches lines strait at us. He poses more questions than he answers. Besides that immortality, why does he say that most gunslingers are left handed? Is that a symbol for sinister? No matter, he is fun to read when he lets out the sun. I like his "unfriendly birds" (they really are, you know) -- so out come his little nods to Poe.

For a kid that went to a bunch of snooty schools, Exeter, Harvard and Oxford, he emerged awake and aware. He has not been not afeared of poetic form and structure. Early on he punched above his weight landing combinations of meter and of rhyme. Must have been all those good years at Michigan. A few baseball selections are here. "Old Timer's Day" is one; his dad had taken him to see Ted Williams in his prime. But the stinker leaves out his brilliant nine stanza, "Baseball". He figures those who like that stuff will go buy a copy of "Museum of Clear Ideas", where it is the lead-off poem.

Not to give the idea at all that the subject is overdone with him, baseball is hard to write poetry about, as if any subject were easy. He does it without any of that phone George Will boyish, cuts-pie drivel. He wrote a book of essays on sports, too. Late in this slim collection, Hall returns to baseball, but as a means to his long dead love, Jane, and with a few other ingredients into "Meatloaf".

Finally, a brief Afterword. Like Milton, he decided on poetry early. If this book is your first, it may well lead you to others. For myself, I am glad I caught and killed an already dead metaphor with my red rubber bullet.

Thank you for your patience.

Both a good introduction and a fitting valediction
By R. M. Peterson
Between 1955 and 2011 Donald Hall published sixteen books of poems. For this, his last book of poems (so he says, at age 87), he has selected from those sixteen books what he regards to be his best poems. THE SELECTED POEMS makes for a fitting valediction, and at the same time a good introduction to a distinctive American poet.

Of the acclaimed American poets I am familiar with, Hall's poetry is more accessible than most. There are 79 poems in this selection: I understood the vast majority of them -- perhaps not all details or nuances, but at least the essence of them. Hall's poetry is not abstract, esoteric, or mystical. The broad setting is America; the more specific setting is New England country life.

What is most characteristic of Hall's poetry is that it is intensely personal. Most of the poems are about Donald Hall, his life and his loved ones. Many of the poems are memorials or lamentations -- for his grandparents, his father, his mother, and for Jane Kenyon. Especially for Jane Kenyon, his wife of 23 years who died of leukemia at age 47. At least a fifth of the poems in the book mourn Jane, some bitterly and angrily. Once again in reading Hall I am brought up short by how starkly and pitilessly he bares his soul. (Along the same lines, this collection reveals an obsession with the act denoted by the strong Middle English word more genteelly rendered as "copulation".)

Of the 79 poems presented here, I marked eight to return to if and when I conduct a personal poetry-reading retrospective. That relatively low ten percent figure is due in large part to the fact that so many of the poems are so personal, and as such they aren't nearly as meaningful to me as they are to Donald Hall. But it also is due, I think, to the fact that while Hall is a good poet, he is not a great or profound one.

Here is one of the eight poems I marked for re-reading in the indefinite future. It is titled "The Coal Fire".

A coal fire burned in a basket grate.
We lay in front of it
while ash collected on the firebrick
like snow.
I looked at you, in the small light
of the coal fire: back
delicate, yet with the form of the skeleton,
cheekbones and chin
carved, mouth full,
and breasts like hills of flowers.

The fire was tight and small and endured
when we added a chunk every hour.
The new piece blazed at first
from the bulky shadow of fire,
turning us bright and dark.
Old coals red at the center
warmed us all night.
If we watched all night
we could not tell when the new
coal flaked into ash.

Wonderful Collection
By The Invisible Pam
If it's hard to review books in a way that provides help to those who might want to buy them-- or not. It's near impossible to do the same with a book of poems. A collection of poems can vary so much, and poetry like wine can be pleasing to one person and leave another frowning. Poems are so very personal. So what can I tell you...

Donald Hall has written all kinds of poems during his long life. Some for children, some for adults. This book is for adults. It's a collection from the many stages of his life. The first poem is about the birth of a child. There are poems of aching sadness stemming from the death of his beloved wife. And there are words just about the normal things, of days on a farm.

Besides saying that this collection is not for children, I think the most useful thing I could tell you is that these poems are accessible. They aren't obtuse or stubborn about giving up their meaning. And if you are like me and like poetry but read it very seldom, I think this little volume would be a nice addition to your shelves.

Home-Made: Contemporary Russian Folk Artifacts, by Vladimir Arkhipov

The clever, bizarre and poignant DIY housewares that fill the pages of Home-Made: Contemporary Russian Folk Artifacts have stories to tell. They communicate the textures of the lives of ordinary Russians during the collapse of the Soviet Union, they highlight alternatives to factory design and disposable goods, and they speak volumes about what goes on in other people's homes--how they spend and scrimp, how they make do. Home-Made highlights the best of the everyday objects made by ordinary Russians during and around the time of the Soviet Union's decline. Many were inspired by a lack of access to manufactured goods. Among the hundreds of idiosyncratic constructions for inside and outside the home are a back massager from a wooden abacus, a television antenna from unwanted forks, and a tiny bathtub plug from a boot heel. The author is himself a self-taught artist: he began exhibiting his own objects and installations in 1990, and collecting and cataloging these everyday, utilitarian objects handmade from modern materials a dozen years ago, in 1994. He accompanies each invaluable artifact with a photograph of the maker and his or her story. Foreward by Susan B. Glasser of the Washington Post Foreign Service.

Charlotte Hobson reviews `Home-Made' in The Telegraph 01.07.06
By D. Murray
A television aerial made out of forks and a lamp made of aeroplane parts; a plastic colander mended in four different places; one shovel that recycles a `men at work' sign and another, the handle of a crutch; DIY sink-plungers, DIY torches, mudflaps, waffle-irons, telephones... These are a few of the `thingamyjigs' to be found in Vladimir Arkhipov's delightful `Home-Made', a sort of Blue Peter extravaganza of the Brezhnev era.
This small book, with it's colour photographs of funny, crudely made objects and short accompanying texts, achieves something matched by few conventional histories - a vivid and moving picture of real life behind the Iron Curtain. The shortages throughout the Soviet era and the Yeltsin years were, of course, the original impetus for much of this ingenuity. After the war there was terrible need, as the pathetic tools and rat-traps made during that time testify. Under Brezhnev, a version of communism was achieved in which money was more or less meaningless; there was not enough in the shops for people to spend their roubles on. Instead they relied on barter and complicated personal networks, friends who could weld metal or supply parts.
On the one hand, the `home-made' phenomenon is a lesson in why the Soviet economy collapsed - everyone was pilfering, not to mention spending their workdays doing their own and others' DIY. Arkhipov suggests that the activity was a direct response to life in the an oppresive state: `Each person who can make something with his hands prefers to make something small and concrete rather than uniting with others to change lives'.
On the other hand, to us living in the disposable age, Arkhipov's collection is something of a vindication of the Soviet Unions anti-consumerism. Each of these objects, however basic, is important. First it's creator had to search around for the materials, barter for them or recognise them in a punctured child's ball or a broken watch-strap. Then it was laboured over, perfected through a series of experiments. Finally it was used and used until it became worn by use. By this time the most mundane artifact is, as you can imagine, a matter for pride and affection. It is almost an heirloom.
Many of the objects are purely functional. But many, perhaps the majority, are not so practical. They are expressions of their creators' passions - rock climbing pegs and fishing reels, toys and tapedecks. Some reveal DIY geniuses for whom the pleasure was in the production itself, like the author's father who fashioned a radio out of a soap dish, flashing Christmas lights and a heat chamber for making rubber car parts. One that seemed to have a particularly Russian charm was a combination of pen and torch. `This,' says the inventor, `is connected with that romantic poetical period in a young man's life when the muse only takes it upon herself to visit him at night... You hold it under the pillow and use it for all your youthful musings'.
In the preface, Susan B Glasser, a Washington Post journalist, mentions a home-made radio `round which the family would huddle, listening to Voice of America', the forks bought `because the Soviet Union was about to collapse and there was nothing else for sale'. Like many Westerners, she seems convinced that everyday life in the USSR - unlike in the US or Europe - revolved entirely around the political situation. Yet one of the most pleasing things about this book is the light it sheds on Soviet citizens' real preoccupations - how to amuse your children while they are eating their dinner (a home-made bubble wand), how to keep your fishing bait dry (an ingenious little box), or how to soothe a sore back (a back-massaager made out of an abacus).
Arkhipov points out that the urge to thingamyjig is universal and hopes to create `a collective virtual record of a worldwide phenomenon'. If you are interested, visit [...]and join the party.

One of my favorite books ever
By +
While some of the circumstances that brought about these objects seem tragic, each suggests possibilities. The book also reminds me how stifling abundance can be: A man describes a radio he made, "This all seems incredible and ridiculous now, after you've seen the Chinese radios in the shops. There's so much of everything now, it's hard to understand the way we lived then. And how we should live now." Indeed.

Made to Stick: Why Some Ideas Survive and Others Die, by Chip Heath, Dan Heath

Mark Twain once observed, “A lie can get halfway around the world before the truth can even get its boots on.” His observation rings true: Urban legends, conspiracy theories, and bogus public-health scares circulate effortlessly. Meanwhile, people with important ideas–business people, teachers, politicians, journalists, and others–struggle to make their ideas “stick.”

Why do some ideas thrive while others die? And how do we improve the chances of worthy ideas? In Made to Stick, accomplished educators and idea collectors Chip and Dan Heath tackle head-on these vexing questions. Inside, the brothers Heath reveal the anatomy of ideas that stick and explain ways to make ideas stickier, such as applying the “human scale principle,” using the “Velcro Theory of Memory,” and creating “curiosity gaps.”

In this indispensable guide, we discover that sticky messages of all kinds–from the infamous “kidney theft ring” hoax to a coach’s lessons on sportsmanship to a vision for a new product at Sony–draw their power from the same six traits.

Made to Stick is a book that will transform the way you communicate ideas. It’s a fast-paced tour of success stories (and failures)–the Nobel Prize-winning scientist who drank a glass of bacteria to prove a point about stomach ulcers; the charities who make use of “the Mother Teresa Effect”; the elementary-school teacher whose simulation actually prevented racial prejudice. Provocative, eye-opening, and often surprisingly funny, Made to Stick shows us the vital principles of winning ideas–and tells us how we can apply these rules to making our own messages stick.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Unabashedly inspired by Malcolm Gladwell's bestselling The Tipping Point, the brothers Heath—Chip a professor at Stanford's business school, Dan a teacher and textbook publisher—offer an entertaining, practical guide to effective communication. Drawing extensively on psychosocial studies on memory, emotion and motivation, their study is couched in terms of "stickiness"—that is, the art of making ideas unforgettable. They start by relating the gruesome urban legend about a man who succumbs to a barroom flirtation only to wake up in a tub of ice, victim of an organ-harvesting ring. What makes such stories memorable and ensures their spread around the globe? The authors credit six key principles: simplicity, unexpectedness, concreteness, credibility, emotions and stories. (The initial letters spell out "success"—well, almost.) They illustrate these principles with a host of stories, some familiar (Kennedy's stirring call to "land a man on the moon and return him safely to the earth" within a decade) and others very funny (Nora Ephron's anecdote of how her high school journalism teacher used a simple, embarrassing trick to teach her how not to "bury the lead"). Throughout the book, sidebars show how bland messages can be made intriguing. Fun to read and solidly researched, this book deserves a wide readership. (Jan. 16)

From School Library Journal
Adult/High School—While at first glance this volume might resemble the latest in a series of trendy business advice books, ultimately it is about storytelling, and it is a how-to for crafting a compelling narrative. Employing a lighthearted tone, the Heaths apply those selfsame techniques to create an enjoyable read. They analyze such narratives as urban legends and advertisements to discover what makes them memorable. The authors provide a simple mnemonic to remember their stickiness formula, and the basic principles may be applied in any situation where persuasiveness is an asset. The book is a fast read peppered with exercises to test the techniques proposed. Some examples act as pop quizzes and engage readers in moments of self-reflection. The book draws on examples from teachers, scientists, and soldiers who have been successful at crafting memorable ideas, from the well-known blue eye/brown eye exercise conducted by an Iowa elementary school teacher as an experiential lesson in prejudice following the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr., to conversations among Xerox repairmen. Readers who enjoyed Malcolm Gladwell's Blink (2005) and The Tipping Point (2000, both Little, Brown) will appreciate this clever take on contemporary culture.—Heidi Dolamore, San Mateo County Library, CA

From Bookmarks Magazine
Chip and Dan Heath—a Stanford professor and an education entrepreneur, respectively—attempt to determine why one idea succeeds while another fails. What could have been a dry marketing textbook is, instead, a generally engaging narrative generously endowed with anecdotes and instructive sidebars. The Wall Street Journal expressed annoyance at the profusion of personal stories, while the Washington Post cited some problems with the overall framework. Overall, however, Made to Stick is a worthy addition to the spate of recent books that explain why we do the things we do and how this self-knowledge can be used more effectively. "Anyone interested in influencing others—to buy, to vote, to learn, to diet, to give to charity or to start a revolution—can learn from this book" (Washington Post). Do Your Ideas Gain Traction and “Stick” or Are They Cast Aside?
By Thomas M. Loarie
Brothers Chip and Dan Heath in their New York Time’s best-selling book, “Made to Stick,” explore the stickiness of an idea. Those of us who spend time in the start-up world marvel at why one idea gains traction and other, seemingly better ideas, fall to wayside. The Heath brothers provide insights on this phenomenon and provide help for those bent on creating ideas that are “sticky.”

“Sticky” ideas are understandable, memorable, and effective in changing thought or behavior. The six underlying SUCCESs principles for making things “stick” are:

• Simplicity – Simple=core+compact. Find and share your core idea; make it simple and profound. “It’s the economy, stupid” (Clinton campaign, 1992) is a great example. The inverted pyramid approach which is used in journalism is a good tool to get your headline.
• Unexpectedness - We need to violate people’s expectations to get them to pay attention. Break existing patterns to get people’s attention. Southwest flight attendants use humor (there are two doors on either side if you need to jump!) to hold attention when giving the pre-flight safety announcement. Humans adapt incredibly quickly to patterns. Consistent sensory stimulation makes us tune out.
• Concreteness – You must help people understand and remember. Don’t use abstractions. Make your core idea concrete. Use common knowledge to make your idea stick. Our greatest villain is the Curse of Knowledge or when we assume everyone knows what we know or shares our unique perspective. We have to see it from the “others” point of view. We forget what other people do not know and slip into “abstractspeak.” Boeing’s criteria for a new plane was not “the best passenger plane in the world” but one that can seat 131 passengers and land on Runway 2-22 at LaGuardia. No ambiguity here.
• Credibility – Help people believe by making sure your idea carries its own credentials. Pass the “Sinatra Test.” Examples offered include “Where’s the Beef?” and Reagan’s “Are you better off today?” Both were credible and resonated as they were based on common shared knowledge.
• Emotional– Make people care by using the power of association, appealing to self-interest, or identity. “People donate to Rokia more than a wide swath of Africa”; “Honoring the Game” versus the use of the word ‘sportsmanship’; “I’m in charge of morale” as stated by a US military cook in Iraq. We must make people feel something to get them to care. We are wired to feel things, not abstractions.
• Stories – Stories get people to act on our ideas. Stories act as a kind of mental flight simulator, preparing us to respond more quickly and effectively. Stories are told and retold because they contain wisdom. The Healths provide what they view are the three basic story plots – the Challenge Plot, The Connection Plot, and the Creativity Plot. Stories can almost single-handedly defeat “The Curse of Knowledge.” I have been involved in a ministry for people in career-transition for over fifteen years. We consistently advise those in-transitions to create stories to highlight their skills and experience when interviewing. It is well understood that interviewers will mostly remember your comportment and more importantly, your stories.

A chapter is devoted to each principle with the authors providing context for clarity and understanding, examples, and tools to guide the development of a “sticky” idea.

The Curse of Knowledge is what escapes most when trying to pitch an idea. It is the natural psychological tendency that consistently gets in the way of our ability to successfully create “sticky ideas” using these principles. Once we know something, we find it hard to imagine what it was like not to know. This knowledge has “cursed” us and makes it difficult to share our knowledge with others. It is because we cannot readily re-create our listeners state of mind. When a CEO discusses “unlocking shareholder value,” there is a tune playing in his head that the employees can’t hear. On the other hand, President John F. Kennedy knew that opaque, abstract missions don’t captivate and inspire people so he concretely challenged the country with “landing on the moon by the end of the decade.”

Throughout the book, the authors present “Idea Clinics” which illustrate how an idea can be made stickier. Example: ”Do smokers really need to understand the workings of the lungs in order to appreciate the dangers of smoking?”

The book itself is “sticky’ filled with stories of normal people facing normal problems who did an amazing thing simply by applying these principles, even if they were not aware that they were doing this. They distinguish themselves by crafting ideas that made a difference.

Do your ideas gain traction and “Stick” or are they cast aside for less important ideas? “Made to Stick” was written for you.

An easy-to-use formula on how to identify and create successful, “sticky” and transformative ideas.
By C.H.E. Sadaphal
Some ideas are very “sticky” meaning they are lasting, generative, and convey an important message. A classic example is: “Do onto others as you would have them do onto you.” In Made to Stick, Chip and Dan Heath explain why ideas stick, and provide the reader with a “sticky blueprint.”

Essentially, sticky ideas are never a matter of happenstance, but all share six common traits. With a keen understanding of all six traits, you will be able to produce stickier ideas and subsequently revitalize the way you express yourself and transform those whom you lead with positive results.
Made to Stick empowers anyone with the right insights and the right message to make any idea “stick.”

The book proceeds linearly through the sticky blueprint: the acronym S.U.C.C.E.S. Hence, in order to make an idea sticky it has to be simple, unexpected, concrete, credible, emotional, and tell a story. The peculiars of each trait are explored in comprehensive detail within each chapter. Generally speaking even though this book is 250+ pages, it is a very quick read.

Made to Stick is one of three books written on transformative change by the Heath brothers. The other two books are Switch: How to change things when change is hard and Decisive: How to make better choices in life and work. There are many areas of cross-over between the three selections, and I have derived the most value from each book after considering it in context of all three. Hence, Made to Stick helps you to start your journey with a bold idea that anyone can latch onto. Switch reveals how to materialize that idea into tough environments. Finally, Decisive equips you with the tools to navigate fuzzy terrain in the midst of your path to something revolutionary.

Good insight on the fact that what most of us ...
By JohnStrafer
This is an interesting read on how to communicate in a way that is impact-full and memorable. Good insight on the fact that what most of us think we are communicating is not received in the way we think it will be by our audience. Some very unique thoughts on the downsides of "too much knowledge" getting in the way of our message. The book has established a formula of sorts that if followed will make your messages much easier to understand and considerably more influential. Good examples (some are awkwardly dated such as the good sportsmanship of Lance Armstrong and the wonderful story of Subway's Jared Fogel but as long as readers ignore that Armstrong was proven a cheater and Jared a deviant it doesn't impact the book at all) highlight the principles of the authors. Readers could go through this book once as a way to understand the underlying psychology of "sticky" messages then refer back to it as a "checklist" of necessary steps while preparing presentations. So this book is something very seldom found: an academic work that actually has practical use.

How do we choose our careers? Forces At Work shows what influenced 85 people in a long-term study, correlating career path to the natal chart. This book gives new perspectives on career development, with "blind" insights by astrologer Oskar Adler, a new look at Gauquelin Sectors, Part of Fortune, Asteroids, Chiron, Ceres and Eris. A great tool for Astrologers and Career Counselors. Reviewer comments from the back cover: "Amy Shapiro's new book, Forces at Work: Astrology and Career is a thorough and comprehensive astrological guide for anyone wishing to understand the uncanny connections between their astrological chart and their work path. Every HR department should have a copy for reference!" -- Shelley L. Ackerman, Astrologer, Author, Columnist, Karmic Relief.com, TheAsthete.com "Amy's Forces at Work fills a gap in the astrological literature of career by providing in-depth research that combines personality theory with astrology. Her study, based on a thorough career survey, incorporates insights from the work of Dr. Oskar Adler, along with comments from study participants to pinpoint astrological findings. This work will appeal to the intermediate to advanced astrologer who wants to refine career counseling methodology." -- Stephanie Jean Clement, Ph.D., Astrologer, Author, President, American Federation of Astrologers "Amy Shapiro's comprehensive book on the use of astrology in career counseling is unique for its detailed case studies through which her depth of counseling experience shines. I was particularly intrigued by her inclusion of the new (since 2006) planets Eris and Ceres in her interpretations—not many astrologers are using Eris at all yet, and most still treat Ceres as an asteroid. Amy's description of Eris as 'provocateur' is interesting, insightful and well supported within her analyses." -- Maria Kay Simms, Astrologer, Artist, Author ~Starcrafts Publishing "Besides relationships and health, choice of a career and life direction is commonly one of an astrological client's most pressing issues. Uniquely, Shapiro not only discusses the usual vocational indicators in the horoscope, she also adds unfamiliar but powerful concepts and interpretations from the legendary Dr. Oskar Adler. Plus, she backs up the theory with scores of charts accompanied by feedback in the subjects' own words. This book will give seasoned counselors new and useful insights. Augmented by handy tips, definitions and checklists, it will also set beginners on the road to perfecting this all-important part of their practice."--Patricia White, Vice-President, Astrolabe "Amy Shapiro is a brilliant Astrologer whose writings illumine deep cosmic connections between one's personal passions and professional path. Amy reveals the power of Astrology as a healing and guiding force and innovative and profound tool for Career Counselors." -- Patricia Huxley-Cohen, MSW, LICSW, Psychotherapist / Counselor; pioneered programs adopted by the Dept of Labor. "Forces at Work combines traditional career counseling techniques with classic astrology. Amy's unique ability to employ her technical skills in both disciplines is revealed in this in-depth study, which the serious practitioner will find insightful." -- Ed Kaznocha, Labor Market Economist In his Foreword, Economist Ed Kaznocha explains how this book explores realms beyond the tools of standard career evaluation surveys.
