Pero tambi�n hubo otros investigadores que aislaron lo que posteriormente se denomin� como vitaminas, entre ellos Casimiro Funk, quien asegur� a principios del siglo XX que si faltaban en la dieta ciertas sustancias se produc�an determinadas alteraciones. Estudi� el beriberi, una enfermedad hasta entonces incurable y que afectaba al sistema nervioso, y encontr� un producto que adicionado a la dieta en cantidades peque��simas, evitaba la aparici�n de la enfermedad. El t�rmino vitaminas, pues, se lo debemos a �l, aunque se equivoc� al englobar a todas en este grupo, quiz� porque crey� que en cada una de ellas hab�a siempre un radical amina, deduciendo que estos elementos eran esenciales para la vida. M�s tarde se comprob� que pocos de estos compuestos eran aminas, pero se sigui� utilizando el nombre porque ya su difusi�n era universal. Hoy en d�a, hasta los m�dicos se refieren a las vitaminas como aquellos elementos presentes en los alimentos que deben ser ingeridos regularmente para conservar la salud, y en ocasiones, la vida. Pero �qu� ha ocurrido para que estos nutrientes b�sicos hayan sido apartados de las recetas m�dicas habituales? �C�mo han podido pasar de ser uno de los pilares de la salud, a ser los grandes ignorados por los m�dicos? Parad�jicamente, y aunque casi han desaparecido de las estanter�as de las farmacias y apenas si existen recetas otorgadas por los m�dicos, “las vitaminas” est�n ahora m�s alcance del p�blico que nunca; hasta los supermercados las ofrecen en atractivos envases y a precios econ�micos. La raz�n para esta aparente incongruencia m�dica es sencilla: si no sirven para casi nada �para qu� recetarlas? Y si son inocuas, deber�n estar junto a los alimentos de uso cotidiano. Por ello, a finales de la d�cada de los 70 apenas si hab�a alguien que diera importancia a estos nutrientes esenciales, y mucho menos a otros similares como los oligoelementos, las enzimas, los amino�cidos o los antioxidantes, sustancias todas condenadas al olvido en favor de los poderosos f�rmacos con los cuales aseguran poder curar cualquier enfermedad. Afortunadamente la medicina natural ha aprovechado este desinter�s “cient�fico”, y nuevos investigadores no ligados a intereses de los laboratorios especializados en la qu�mica, est�n sacando conclusiones esperanzadoras para el tratamiento de numerosas enfermedades mediante lo que se denomina como Medicina Ortomolecular.
