Required reading...

When I teach students and entrepreneurs about the processes of how individuals come up with and pursue new venture opportunities, I have found this book invaluable. Most students and entrepreneurs approach venture creation with the notion in mind that all good ideas are able to acquire resources needed for idea survival and growth. However, what Markham and Mugge describe so eloquently is the actionable steps individuals can engage in that make it more likely that their innovative ideas will survive and grow. All good ideas do not get resources--it takes hard work, patience, and a framework. This book is required reading for anyone looking to implement an innovative idea, whether in a new venture context or existing company.

A great process is necessary for generating great outcomes; this book provides a great process

As policy developer, analyst, and instructor who focuses primarily on the macro environment for innovation (e.g., funding programs for R&D and commercialization, infrastructure support, tax policy, regulatory review), I greatly enjoyed the more micro-level focus of Traversing the Valley of Death. In particular, I was impressed by how much work over the years has gone into developing the book's comprehensive and detailed thought process and tools to guide both individuals and teams of innovators in large and small organizations. The methodology outlined in the book is clearly the result of considerable experience, including both successes and failures. It is a testament to the importance of a thoughtful, well-informed, thorough process for determining successful outcomes (even if conditions in the macro environment are favorable). An innovator can have the greatest idea in the world, but without a solid, tested set of steps for taking that innovation through the valleys and over the hurdles on the path to commercialization, most innovations don't get much farther than the starting blocks. This book provides the tools innovators need to complete and win the ongoing race to develop and implement new products that help grow the economy and improve our quality of life.

Bad fonts make Kindle version nearly unreadable

I'll update the review when/if I finish reading the book, but the Kindle version is horribly formatted. Am reading it on two different formats, one a brand new Samsung Note 5, and the other an old Galaxy Tab 7. In both cases the orientation is forced to landscape. This forces you to manually zoom in on every single page, and then you have to zoom out in order to turn the page. (See picture with my hand, that's the 7" tablet and it won't allow portrait orientation). But what really makes it hard to read text is some kind of font glitch which collapses many of the spaces in between words and even makes the end of one word overlap the beginning of another. (see other picture for sample) Someone needs to fix this as it makes what should otherwise be a fine book, very difficult to read. When the Kindle format is redone , and someone notifies me about it, then I will increase my rating.
