More of what we've come to expect from Bad Kitty plus a civics lesson

Bad Kitty for President by Nick Bruel is the newest Bad Kitty book. This series follows Bad Kitty (who is a very bad kitty) and is perfect for kids who are ready to transition from picture to chapter books. This book follows Bad Kitty as he runs for president (of the kitty association) and he learns how the American political system works.

This is a fantastic book full of laughs while also teaching readers about the political system. Bad Kitty's campaign is full of scandals and lies (inferring that his opponent may be a dog, getting in a cat fight) which are very entertaining. If you loved the other Bad Kitty books then you will love this one also.

Appropriateness: This is an illustrated novel that is perfect for kids that are moving from picture books to chapter books and it's short enough to work as a read aloud for younger readers. I recommend it to readers 4+

My son has recently graduated from picture books to chapter books. Every one of the earlier Bad Kitty books have been laugh out loud winners, and "Bad Kitty for President" is right up there with the others.

Bad Kitty Has My Vote!

I am a Children's Librarian and I love Bad Kitty almost as much as the kids do! I am also someone with a BS in government and am looking forward doing a program for my Library about how we elect our president, using Bad Kitty for President. Kudos again to Nick Bruel for breaking down our election process in a way that elementary students can understand. And more kudos for him doing it in a non-partisan way that can be used without ruffling of feathers on either side. Can't wait to see what Bad Kitty does next - she is made of awesome!

A Great Cthulhu Mythos Anthology

"The final section of the transcript was considerably more interesting, however; it recorded a number of brief scenes that must never have appeared in the finished film. I quote one of them in its entirety:
PLAYROOM, CHURCH SCHOOL -- LATE AFTERNOON.
(DELETED)
INT: This Malay youth has sketched a picture of a demon he calls Shoo Goron.
(To boy) I wonder if you can tell me something about the instrument he's
blowing out of. It looks like the Jewish shofar, or ram's horn. (Again
to Boy) That's all right. No need to be frightened.
BOY: He no blow out. Blow in.
INT: I see -- he draws air in through the horn, is that right?
BOY: No horn. Is no horn. (Weeps) Is HIM,"

That is one of many fine moments in one of the greatest Lovecraftian tales ever penned, "Black Man With A Horn," by T. E. D. Klein. The story had its first publication in this excellent anthology of Mythos fiction edited by Ramsey Campbell for Arkham House. Every time I return to "Black Man With a Horn" it stuns me with its brilliance, similar to the effect of rereading Karl Edward Wagner's classic "Sticks." The tale is told in first person, and it is structured in similar fashion to the way H. P. Lovecraft himself structured tales such as "The Call of Cthulhu," with bits of quotations and news articles and revelations that, piled up, paint a terrifying portrait of supernatural horror. There are many wonderful references to Lovecraft, and here and there we are delighted with a wee quotation from one of HPL's letters (the story begins with the epigraph,
"The Black (words obscured by postmark) was fascinating--I must get a snap shot of him."
--H. P. Lovecraft, postcard to E. Hoffmann Price, 7/23/1934;
and this combination of fanciful play, a wink of the Lovecraftian eye, with a tale that grows more and more terrifying, is delicious. Every time I return to this tale I am tempted to call it my all-time favourite Mythos tale written by someone other than H. P. Lovecraft (a position held by Robert Bloch's magnificent "The Shadow from the Steeple").

Ramsey Campbell's first book was an Arkham House hardcover that was published when he was 19 years old, and it was a collection of Cthulhu Mythos stories. He has now become one of the genre's masters, hailed by some as the most important weird fiction writer since Lovecraft. Although he went through a phase where he tried to write tales that shewed absolutely no Lovecraftian influence, he has, now and again, returned to the Mythos mode. For this book he penned a great wee tale, "The Faces at Pine Dunes." Unlike some modern writers, who feel that the only way to approach the Lovecraftian tale is to treat it with humor, Ramsey's approach is almost always dead serious, and thus chilling. Ramsey has a wonderful talent for evoking a dark and haunting sense of place, and he does so with brilliance in this fine tale.

One curious fragment in the oeuvre of H. P. Lovecraft is "The Book," a thwarted attempt by HPL to write a weird tale based on the opening three poems in his "Fungi from Yuggoth" sonnet sequence. With "The Black Tome of Alsophocus," Martin S. Warnes has completed HPL's fragment, and the tale is published under a dual bi-line with Lovecraft's name first. Such a practice cannot be considered a success unless the living author captures the essence of Lovecraft's singular style. This is something that Derleth tried to do, but could not accomplish, in his less-than-inspired (with some few exceptions) "posthumous collaborations" that are collected in THE WATCHERS OUT OF TIME. Happily, Mr. Warnes succeeds where Derleth did not, and he gives us a tale that is purely Lovecraftian. One wishes that Robert M. Price had included this tale of the Crawling Chaos in his Chaosium Cycle anthology, THE NYARLATHOTEP CYCLE.

I have not yet read any of the many fantasy novels penned by A. A. Attanasio, but I quite enjoy his magnificent tales of the Cthulhu Mythos and have long wished to see an entire book under his bi-line of such tales. (The only other tale of his that I remember reading was "Glimpses," which Gerald W. Page included in his fine Arkham House anthology, DARK THINGS, 1975.) His tale in this book, "The Star Pools," is a rousing adventure story with a subtle Mythos subtext, and it is enormously effective. He has a wonderful talent for characterization and dialogue that one does not always find in Mythos tales.

Other tales include: "Crouch End," a rather silly yet entertaining tale by Stephen King; "The Second Wish," by Brian Lumley; "Dark Awakening," by Frank Belknap Long; "Shaft Number 247," by Basil Copper, and one of the scariest Lovecraftian tales that I have ever read, brilliant; and "Than Curse the Darkness," by David Drake. The cover illustration of the Arkham House hardcover is a delightful work by Jason Van Hollander -- I especially love the landscape of Kingsport as portray'd on ye back cover. Editor Campbell has also supplied an interesting introduction in which he pens a wee history of the Mythos. This is an excellent book for anyone interested in seeing what modern authors have done with this imaginary landscape spill'd from ye mind of our finest dreamer, Howard Phillips Lovecraft, Esq.

I was terrified of just about everything after reading this book. Even the great Stephen King writes similarly to Lovecraft! Oh, and speaking of King, with that story "Crouch End"... YIKES! If you want to read this Stephen King story, it is now in Nightmares & Dreamscapes. Sweet dreams...

About the Author
Al Decker is a recognized authority on enterprise risk management (ERM), information security and privacy, and internal controls. He has more than 30 years of professional experience in private industry and public accounting. A former worldwide executive for security and privacy services at IBM, he has also been executive director of enterprise risk management at Electronic Data Systems (EDS) and the national partner-in-charge of IT security services and national director of IT assurance services at Coopers & Lybrand, LLP (now PWC). He has also served as an independent director for Quadrem International Holdings, Ltd. Al holds an MBA from Rutgers University and a BA from William Paterson University.�
Donna Galer is a seasoned executive who entered the insurance industry in 1976 at Crum & Forster after several years at Chase Manhattan (JP Morgan Chase). She later joined Zurich Financial Services, where she served in many executive roles. While based in Zurich, Switzerland, she served as regional manager for North America and interim worldwide head of investor relations. More recently, she was the EVP and chief administrative officer (CAO) of Zurich's general insurance segment worldwide. Active on many industry-related boards, she has published extensively on risk management and related topics. Donna holds an MA from Rutgers University and a BA from Wagner College.

Too short and incomplete

The authors present it as a book on Enterprise Risk Management (ERM), more specifically a book that will help the ERM leader to practice a better risk management. They claim that this is the book that the ERM leader should hand to its functional leaders to practice a sound risk management. In my opinion the book fells very short of this ambitious objective. The book is way too short to discuss with some minimum level of needed detail the complexities of ERM.
The book has four parts and eight appendixes (all in 142 pages including the Endnotes). Part I, the book’s most interesting portion, has eight Guide Points that give a nice flavor of ERM. It is not detailed, there is no description, but a reader can get a rough idea of what ERM means in just a few minutes. In these fifteen pages, the authors briefly define ERM, explain the importance of linking it to the business model and its strategy, and mention the importance of approaching all the risks in a combined fashion. Part II provides a (too) brief discussion of five important points in ERM: Identify, Prioritize, Mitigate, Report and Measure. Independently of agreeing or not with the book’s approach, the way this is treated is, again, too short (25 pages for the five points), so we do not have the chance of learning from it. Part III discusses five functions of the firm: Finance, Human Resources, Marketing, Information Technology, and Investor Relations. In my opinion, again, the discussion is way too short, but it is also difficult to understand why we do not see a discussion related to other areas of the firm that are equally important for risk management like for example; Operations, Security, Supply Chain, etc. Part IV discusses a short case in which the authors discuss the application of ERM through the Process Points of Part II. The eight Appendixes provided at the end are really short (seven of them are just one page) and do not, generally add much to the book.
In sum, I did not like this book; probably its best part is the 15-page long Part I in which the authors give a very brief description of ERM. Other than that I really struggle to find something that I like.

ERM made easy to understand

This book on Enterprise Risk Management provides a clear working framework for understanding how to put together a program from a practical standpoint. Part of the value is the recognition that not all enterprise risk is purely financial, but that other operations departments also create or manage risk that can be disastrous to the organization also. I found this to be a practical guide for establishing an enterprise risk management function particularly for smaller organizations.

Excellent ERM guide

I liked this book because it is well written, logical and to the point. There are numerous examples that cover significant functional areas within a corporation and the case study provides insight into embarking on an ERM project. It is an excellent guide for anyone in the risk management field.

A FRENCH FEMINIST INTERPRETS LACAN'S PSYCHOANALYSIS

At the time this book was published in 1982, Jane Gallop was professor of French at Miami University; she has also written Intersections: A Reading of Sade with Bataille, Blanchot, and Klossowski.

She wrote in the Introduction, "[the book] studies the relation between contemporary feminist theory and the psychoanalysis of Jacques Lacan... it enters into a network of problems: problems of sexual difference, of desire, of reading, or writing, of power, of family, of phallocentrism and of language... this book is ... a contribution to the sort of thinking it describes---that is, a contribution to French psychoanalytic feminist thought from the vantage point of these English-speaking shores." For the undergrad college student and interested researcher

This book is designed to be the standard undergraduate text for a traditional course in engineering. A one semester course would likely use chapters 1-5. For classes with an emphasis on aerospace engineering, aerodynamics is covered in Chapter six.

This book, more than most, includes a lot of commentary on real world situations that both keep interest level up and which indicate some of the types of applications which the student may find himself studying in post-college life. This includes some quite interesting commentary on fluid flow in biological systems including the human lung and wings of insects and birds, studies on the air flow around large trucks, and numerous photos and comments on strangely shaped aircraft studied by NASA and others.

At this time the photo of the book cover on the Amazon description is not correct. Perhaps they used a photo of an earlier edition. Also the publication date of the current edition is given by the publisher as 2011.

Blessing to North India

In 1998 a friend sent our team the Walking in Victory book for our own personal use. We had been praying for some time for some simple Bible teaching material that would cover the basics for new believers. We are working directly with many Churches in North India helping them with discipleship. God immediately showed us that we were to have this book translated into the Hindi language. After receiving permission from NRM we had the book translated and printed. In less than three months we distributed 1000 books to Church leaders and hungry disciples of Christ. The testimonies are overwhelming of how God has been using this book to help new and old believers gain greater understanding of who they are in Christ. The Hindi version is now in 4 different countries and in more than 8 different states in India. God is using this material to establish His people on the foundation of Jesus Christ. We are grateful to NRM for this wonderful teaching material that helps people study the Word of God. Praise the Lord for God's gift to India, where there is still very little teaching material in their language. At least what is now available is annointed teaching. Pray that a ministry in India will be able to support the continued printing and distribution of this book.
